Hydrogen is a chemical element which is used either as chemical compound or fuel. Hydrogen is traditionally used as chemical compound by refinery, metal, chemical, and other similar industries. Hydrogen as fuel is a recently emerged application. Though research for hydrogen use as fuel had started long back, but it is not yet fully commercialized. Hydrogen can be used as fuel to generate energy either by directly burning it or using it in fuel cells. Hydrogen can also be used as an energy storage medium. It can be produced using primary energy sources and then stored energy can be utilized later by using produced hydrogen.
Major consumers of hydrogen are refinery and ammonia industry. Both consume approx. 91% of total hydrogen produced. Methanol producers are the third largest consumer with around 6% of consumption share.
Currently 90% of hydrogen is produced for petroleum refinery and ammonia industry. Market size of global hydrogen production is estimated at 53 million metric tons in 2010, out of which 12% is the share of merchant hydrogen and rest is captive production. With decreasing sulfur level in petroleum products, lowering crude oil quality, and rising demand of hydrogen operated fuel cell applications, global hydrogen production volume is forecasted to grow by compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.6% during 2011–2016.
Hydrogen is either produced by a plant located on-site (at the point of consumption) or purchased from any third party (merchant producer). On-site production is managed by either the consumer itself (captive production) or merchant producer. When hydrogen is not produced on-site, delivery, and transportation comes in picture. Pipelines, trailers (liquid or gas hydrogen), and cylinders (compressed gas) are the various delivery options and selected on the basis of delivery volume.
The report ‘Global Hydrogen Generation Market by Merchant & Captive Type, Distributed & Centralized Generation, Application and Technology - Trends & Forecasts (2011 – 2016)’ covers all six geographical regions, i.e. Europe& Eurasia, North America, Central & South America, Asia & Oceania, Middle East and Africa and all geographic markets are segmented by applications.
The agenda of this analyst briefing is to discuss market drivers, opportunities, and burning issues for global hydrogen energy market.
