Polymerization Initiator Market

Polymerization Initiator Market by Type (Persulfate, Peroxides, Azo Compounds), Active Species (Free-radical, Cationic, Anionic), Application (Polyethylene, Polypropylene, PVC, Polystyrene, ABS), and Region - Global Forecast to 2024

Report Code: CH 7332 Sep, 2019, by marketsandmarkets.com

[155 Pages Report] The polymerization initiator market size is projected to grow from the estimated USD 3.4 billion in 2019 to USD 4.2 billion by 2024, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.3% during the forecast period. Polymerization initiators are a source of any chemical species that reacts with a monomer to form an intermediate compound which is capable of linking successively with a large number of other monomers into a polymeric compound.

These initiators are used in radical polymerization to regulate the initiation by heat or light. In the case of free-radical polymerization, the type of initiator to be used depends on two main reasons, i.e., solubility and decomposition temperature. The initiator must be soluble in the solvent, and the decomposition temperature of the particular initiator should also be below, or at the boiling point of the solvent being used with while performing polymerization

Polymerization Initiator Market

Persulfate to be the second-fastest-growing component of the polymerization initiators market

Polymerization persulfates are a group of chemically active compounds that contain one peroxide group per sulfur in their molecular structure. Persulfates are also termed as alkali metal salts which are manufactured by the electrochemical processes. These persulfates release oxygen, which is why these compounds are used as initiators and oxidizing agents. The physical appearance of the persulfate types is based on the oxidation requirements and price as the functional characteristics of these materials remains the same, and these are used interchangeably in most of the applications.  There are three types of persulfates, viz., ammonium, sodium, and potassium.

Polypropylene to be the second-largest type segment of the polymerization initiators market.

Propylene homopolymer is the most widely used general-purpose grade as it exhibits a high strength-to-weight ratio. It is stiffer & stronger than polypropylene copolymer and shows good chemical resistance and weldability. It is used in numerous end-use applications such as packaging, textiles, healthcare, pipes, automotive, and electrical products. These polymers are optically clear and flexible, which make them the first choice where transparency and good appearance is required. When compared to propylene homopolymer, both have almost similar properties except that it is comparatively softer and exhibits higher impact strength & toughness.

Polymerization Initiator Market

APAC is estimated to account for the largest market share during the forecast period.

The APAC polymer industry is expected to expand in the upcoming years and is likely to present several significant opportunities for foreign investors. According to the American Chamber of Commerce Singapore and US Chamber of Commerce, about 19% of APAC countries are planning to shift their business from China into their region. Indonesia is identified as one of the most attractive countries for business expansion, which is followed by Vietnam, Myanmar, and Thailand. Apart from this, low-cost labor availability in countries such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, and Vietnam will be an added advantage.

Key Market Players

The leading players in the polymerization initiators market are BASF (Germany), Arkema (France), AkzoNobel (Netherlands), Celanese (US), United Initiators (Germany), LANXESS (Germany), and Adeka Corporation (Japan). Most of these leading players operate globally and have a widespread distribution network. These players have strong R&D and focus on producing high-performance polymers to meet the demand of end-users.

Recent Developments

  • In July 2019, United Initiators acquired 100% shares of hidrojen peroksit A.S., which is a single plant producing different qualities of hydrogen peroxide in Turkey. This will help the organization to increase its product portfolio and serve several non-polymer applications such as textile, mining, water treatment, and farming. The company will also be investing actively in improving the efficiency of the plant and also increase the capacity of hydrogen peroxide in the future.
  • In March 2018, AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals developed a new technology for the production of organic peroxides. The company planned on supplying emulsion-based organic peroxides for the production of polyvinyl chloride as emulsion products are considered a safer alternative than solvent-based peroxides. These emulsion-based organic peroxides can also be used in the polymerization reactions as it contains an anti-freeze agent which prevents the formation of ice crystals during the reaction, thus, hampering the reaction.

The study involves four major activities in estimating the current market size of a polymerization initiator. Exhaustive secondary research was done to collect information related to the polymerization initiator market. The next step was to validate these findings, assumptions, and sizing with industry experts across the value chain through primary research. Both top-down and bottom-up approaches were employed to estimate the overall market size. After that, market breakdown and data triangulation were used to estimate the market size of segments and subsegments.

Secondary Research

In the secondary research process, various secondary sources, such as Hoovers, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, and Dun & Bradstreet have been referred to identify and collect information for this study. These secondary sources included annual reports, press releases & investor presentations of companies; white papers; certified publications; articles by recognized authors; gold standard & silver standard websites; regulatory bodies; trade directories; and databases.

Primary Research

The polymerization initiator market comprises several stakeholders, such as raw material suppliers, technology developers, end-product manufacturers, and regulatory organizations in the supply chain. The demand side of this market is characterized by the development of the construction and transportation industries. The supply side is characterized by advancements in technology and diverse application industries. Various primary sources from both the supply and demand sides of the market were interviewed to obtain qualitative and quantitative information.

Following is the breakdown of primary respondents

Market Size Estimation

Both top-down and bottom-up approaches were used to estimate and validate the size of the global polymerization initiator market and to estimate the sizes of various other dependent submarkets. The research methodology used to estimate the market size includes the following steps:

  • The key players in the industry were identified through extensive secondary research.
  • The supply chain of the industry and market size, in terms of value and volume, were determined through primary and secondary research.
  • All percentage shares split, and breakdowns were determined using secondary sources and verified through primary sources.
  • All possible parameters that affect the markets covered in this research study were accounted for, viewed in extensive detail, verified through primary research, and analyzed to obtain the final quantitative and qualitative data.
  • The research includes the study of reports, reviews, and newsletters of the key industry players, along with extensive interviews with key officials, such as directors and marketing executives.

Data Triangulation

After arriving at the total market size through the estimation process explained above, the overall market was split into several segments and subsegments. The data triangulation and market breakdown procedures were employed, wherever applicable, to complete the overall market size estimation process and arrive at the exact statistics for all segments and subsegments. The data was triangulated by studying various factors and trends from both the demand and supply sides. In addition, the market size was validated by using both the top-down and bottom-up approaches. It was then verified through primary interviews. Hence, for every data segment, there are three sources—top-down approach, bottom-up approach, and expert interviews. The data was assumed to be correct when the values arrived at from the three sources matched.
