AMI systems provide the information about energy usage to utilities and consumers thus establishing a two-way communication system. Meter readings and notifications (tampers, etc.) are transmitted to the utility company and dynamic messages such as outage notification or connect/disconnect commands from the utility company are sent to the customerís In-Home Display (IHD) devices via communication networks. Remote meter reading through the smart metering system (smart meters, communication modules) allows reduced bill estimations and requirement for manual meter readers and remote load management during peak usage periods. The two-way communication capability of AMI systems combined with demand response, transmission automation, and distribution automation will help transform the electric utility grid to a smart grid. On the distribution network, AMI can locate overloaded points of connection and identify premises where line charges need to be reviewed. With AMI technology, distributors can also discover transformers or feeders that are either underutilized or overloaded enabling load transfers within the network.
Endpoint hardware such as smart meters and network communication hardware form a major part of AMI implementation cost. While smart meter deployments will save operational cost for utilities along with improved non-technical loss identification like theft/tamper detection and outage notification, AMI systems will also allow for consumer bill savings by means of Time of Use (TOU) billing. Other key components in deploying an AMI system have varying levels of adoption by utility companies globally. While metering systems and communication infrastructure (data concentrator units, meter collectors) and Meter data management are expected to have a high adoption trend in the short and medium term, system integration, meter data analytics and AMI managed services are expected to have a high adoption trend in the long run.
One of the most important driving factors for deploying AMI systems are the regulations and mandates by legislative bodies. AMI deployment patterns widely vary region wise. The NA region is expected to see a slowdown in the Advanced Metering Infrastructure Market by 2018 as most AMI projects funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) 2009 for investor-owned larger utilities in the U.S. are expected to reach completion by 2015. Smaller co-operative utilities are expected to inject funds for AMI deployments in the U.S., professional and IT related services and solutions related to AMI such as system integration, AMI as a Service and meter data analytics market revenues are expected to surge. The global AMI market is expected to grow to $28.45 billion in 2018 at a CAGR of 12.4% from 2013 to 2018.
