The engines segment is the core business of the company, which is the key engine supplier for outdoor power equipment manufacturers such as MTD Products, Inc., Husqvarna Outdoor Products Group, and Deere & Company, among others. Briggs & Stratton manufactures gas engines for power products such as lawnmowers, snow blowers, pressure washers, portable gas generators, and construction equipment. It also manufactures commercial engines through its brand Vanguard Engines.

In 2014, Briggs & Stratton launched its quietest lawnmower engine equipped with its new Quiet Power Technology (QPT). Briggs & Stratton added five new gas engines to its product portfolio— one as part of its 625 ex series and one as part of its 450 series in the lawnmower engines segment, and three engines in the 1650, 1450, and 950 series in the general purpose engines segment. Briggs & Stratton launched its Ready Start technology engines to power lawnmowers. The new technology feature enables the engine to start within two five-second cranking attempts in weather above 32°C. Husqvarna, one of Briggs & Stratton’s leading customers, uses this engine.

Kohler Co., under its engines and generators division, manufactures and markets generators and engines. The company manufactures general purpose small gas, diesel, and mixed fuel engines, which cater to applications such as lawnmowers, agricultural tillers, industrial pressure washers, and generators, among others.

In 2017, the company launched two new engines to expand its CommandPro single cylinder horizontal shaft engine line-up. Kohler added three gas engines to its UTV engines product portfolio with the launch of the CH395, CH440, and ECH440 models of small gas engines. Kohler launched the new EFI series engines for consumer lawnmowers. The engine is designed specifically for consumer lawnmowers, including lawn tractors and zero-turn radius mowers. Kohler launched a new low emissions engine model, the ECH440LE gas engine. The engine shows considerable reduction in carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, without it affecting engine performance.
