Acuo Technologies Dominates the Consolidated VNA Market

The vendor neutral archives market is fairly consolidated with only 10 to 12 major players dominating the space. Although a consolidated market, the competition prevailing in the market is fierce as diverse players having varying backgrounds, experience, and expertise claim that their VNA solutions are truly vendor-agnostic. Typically, there are three major kinds of players that supply VNA products—PACS vendors, independent software vendors, and infrastructure vendors. These players compete with each other to expand their market shares by bringing continuous product innovations and leveraging opportunities in this high-growth market. In 2012, the top five players occupied more than 77% of the market. The market leader—Acuo Technologies (U.S.)—held the largest market share with its Universal Clinical Platform (UCP) software suite, which is deployed in around 1000 hospitals. Recently, in November 2012, Acuo along with Dell signed a nine-year contract valued at approximately $40 million with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to provide Acuo’s UCP solution that would consolidate imaging studies from almost 62 PACS sites from the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.

The biggest challenge faced by most VNA firms is the challenge of providing flexible and customized solutions to healthcare organizations. Most companies overcome this challenge by offering best-of-breed solutions that employ a combination of multiple technologies under a single contract. This further intensifies the market competition, thereby bringing about changes in the market at an increasing speed.

The most widely adopted VNA solutions are on-premise VNAs because of their high customer satisfaction, owing to enhanced data ownership and control these solutions offer. Hybrid VNAs and fully cloud-hosted VNAs are the high-growth areas of the global VNA market because implementation of cloud computing technology in these solutions reduces their costs substantially.

The global VNA report covers close to 93 developments for 15 major players in the market between the fiscal years 2010 to Q2 2013. The analysis of these developments reveals that agreements, collaborations, partnerships, joint ventures, and partnerships contributed to 37% of these developments. The large contribution of these partnerships can be attributed to the demand for best-of-breed solutions in the VNA market.

The PACS market, on the other hand, is a mature market with several well-established players. The challenges faced by companies providing PACS to the market are retaining their market shares and differentiating their PACS products to meet market requirements, tapping of new customer segments, and increasing penetration rates of their products in emerging regions such as Asia-Pacific and RoW.
