Covid-19 has caused major disruptions in the acoustic insulation marker. All the end-segments were highly impacted. Power is major segment in acoustic insulation market due to the necessity of energy conservation and energy efficiency. The company witnesses a decline of 2.5% in demand Y-O-Y in Q1 of 2020. The demand for electricity is expected to decline by approximately 2.0% in 2020, according to IEA. Industrial sector is the major consumer of electricity followed by residential, commercial, and service sectors. Industrial and commercial sectors establishments were closed due to lockdowns, social distancing measures, and a restricted supply chain which in turn lead to the decrease in the demand of electricity. The demand of global oil & gas also suffered heavily due to the pandemic. The sector faced a vicious shock in 2020 with a sudden and massive drop in global demand due to the outbreak of COVID-19. However, the economies have now started recovering due to which the demand is expected to grow.
The demand for acoustic, heating, and cooling facilities for comfort from the growing middle-class population is increasing. Acoustic insulation reduces external disturbances caused by neighbours, traffic, and other activities, and has many advantages. Acoustic insulation materials also offer better fire resistance, thermal resistance and reduced energy consumption and help to reduce reverberations to maintain perfect acoustic environment in professional spaces, like recording studios, opera halls, and theatres. The improvements in standard of living and infrastructural activities in building & construction sector in developed and developing countries are driving the acoustic insulation market.
Consumption of energy is more in countries like India and China due to huge economic growth. Building and construction and transportation industries of APAC are growing rapidly, increasing the demand for acoustic insulation materials in the region. With the growing middle-class population, the demand for comfort is increasing, ultimately leading to the high demand for acoustic insulation materials.
The building & construction industry accounts for a large share of the overall acoustic insulation market. However, the slow growth of the building & construction sector in Europe is a major restraint to the acoustic insulation market. As per Eurostat, the production in construction declined by 2.3% in the Euro area and by 2.1% in the EU, Y-O-Y in December 2020. Moreover, the annual average production in construction fell Y-O-Y in 2020, by 5.7% in the euro area and by 5.0% in the EU. In addition, In the Euro area, civil engineering decreased by 3.8% and building construction by 1.8% in 2020 whereas, in EU, civil engineering decreased by 4.2% and building construction by 1.5%. The housing construction sector in some regions, especially Europe, is yet to gain momentum. This has a direct impact on the acoustic and thermal insulation market. Some of the countries in Europe have started gaining traction in the construction sector such as Romania (+11.5%), Germany (+2.2%), and the Netherlands (+0.7%). However, some countries have observed the largest decline in construction activities, such as Belgium (-13.0%), Czechia (-12.4%), and France (-9.7%). The slow growth of the construction industry is also attributed to the rise in real estate price in countries, such as the UK and France. These factors are restraining the acoustic insulation market in the European region, which is the largest global market for acoustic insulation.
Glass wool is used across many industries, such as home building and pipelines but it contains carcinogens which raises the concerns about health problems. Aerogel can replace conventional insulation material, such as glass wool in the building and construction segment. It is one-third the size and weight of glass wool, but 37 times more efficient in terms of insulation. The insulating value of aerogel per inch is two to four times greater than that of glass wool or foam plastic. In terms of thickness, half an inch of aerogel provides the same amount of insulation as a 3-inch layer of glass wool, enabling space saving. These are also fire resistant. Since aerogel is a better insulator than glass wool, it is an ideal substitute.
The only disadvantage of aerogel is its high cost. However, its cost is expected to decrease in the near future with various R&D activities being undertaken. Aerogel is widely used in high-end applications, such as aerospace for insulation or collecting space particles and in critical chemical processes as a catalyst or adsorption agent. Materials such as rock wool, glass wool, or Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam and Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) foam have significant market share, good customer base, easier manufacturing and are cost effective. With continued R&D activities, market players may be able to undertake cost-effective production of aerogel. This will provide opportunities for the market players in the acoustic insulation market.
Proper disposal and recycling of glass wool is a major challenge for the glass wool manufacturers. Also, protective clothing and masks are required during the disposal of glass wool. To develop advanced recycling & disposal technology and infrastructure for glass wool, factors such as incentives, infrastructure, and market commitment needs to be considered. Thus, the end-of-life of glass wool represents a major challenge to the building and construction industry as European regulations require solutions to correctly recycle and dispose these materials. Additionally, natural fiber materials, especially rock wool product waste, are non-biodegradable and are used as landfill. In order to utilize materials efficiently, the European Commission is taking necessary steps in the manufacturing process to minimize wastage and enable reuse for different purposes.

Transportation application accounts for the second-largest share in acoustic insulation market in 2021. The transportation industry uses acoustic insulation for soundproofing against sound systems installed, engines and other machinery sounds, and external noise. In the marine and aviation industries, it is mainly used to mitigate noise in engine rooms, cabins, panel rooms, vibration noise from hulls and structures, and wave slapping noise traveling from one room to another.
Elastomeric foam is projected to be the fastestest-growing segment during the forecast period. Elastomeric foam insulation is rubber composed of a closed-cell structure available in factory-made tubes, sheets, or rolls. The outside edge consists of a smooth surface or skin which serves as a built-in vapor retarder. The flexible nature makes it less vulnerable to cracks, breakage, and material loss in comparison to rigid insulation options like cellular glass, polyiso and phenolic foam. It is fiber-free and emits low-VOC. These factors are driving the use of elastomeric foam as acoustic insulation material.
Europe accounts for the largest share in global acoustic insulation market in 2020. Strong industrial base in developed economies such as the UK, France, Italy, Spain and Germany and the increasing necessity of soundproofing in industries of these countries are driving the demand for acoustic insulation market in Europe. The energy transition with increasing emphasis on sound isolation is becoming increasingly important. The insufficiency in soundproofing is considered a defect that decreases the value of the property in accordance with Article 1490 cc. These factors have made Europe a major market for acoustic insulation
