COVID-19 impact on Global Biodegradable Plastics Market

Biodegradable plastics are used in various industries, such as packaging, consumer goods, textiles, and agriculture & horticulture. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, the industries had been affected throughout the world. Manpower shortage, logistical restrictions, material unavailability, and other restrictions had slowed the growth of the industry during the previous year. Due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and its gradual spread, industries of essential needs, like getting foods and required supplies safely to the consumers are increasingly affected. The global impact has led to sharp reduction in demand for some types of packaging which are condemned as non-essential. On the other hand, the demand for essential packaging such as e-commerce shipment has seen massive growth. These changes are presenting the packaging companies with new set of challenges.  The effect of Covid-19 pandemic on the packaging industry will be mixed due to these reasons. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for textile products has faced a drastic impact globally. The lockdown created a panic situation, and factories manufacturing textile products were closed or operated in a limited workforce. This situation also created a blockage in the supply chain and affected the whole value chain, from raw material suppliers to end consumers. The stores closed, and the buyers had to cancel or postpone their orders as their inventories were full. The International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) predicted that the drop in demand in 2020 could be around 10% from 2019 demand. However, the textile used in the medical industry saw an increase. According to Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), slow economic growth due to the COVID-19 pandemic can affect food security, farm livelihoods, greenhouse gas emission, and trade globally. The demand is directly related to the falling income. OECD projection indicates that calorie demand per capita could fall by 1% globally. The major effects can be seen in developing countries. Lower consumer demand and subsequent decline in prices lead to a reduction in agricultural production.

Biodegradable Plastics Market Dynamics

Driver: Increasing use in packaging and compostable bag applications

Packaging is one of the fastest-growing industries globally. According to a National Geographic study, approximately 40.0% of plastic produced is packaging used just once and then discarded. Moreover, approximately 500 million plastic bags are used worldwide annually. However, the increasing use of plastics poses a severe threat to the environment. With the advent of digital media, consumers and manufacturers have shifted their preference toward recyclable and eco-friendly materials. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive has been established in Europe, which has two main objectives: to help prevent trade barriers and reduce the impact of packaging waste on the environment. Similarly, the US FDA imposes stringent regulations related to recycling plastic materials used for food contact. All these regulations are expected to offer growth opportunities for biodegradable plastics.

The increasing demand for eco-friendly food packaging is shifting the focus of major plastic manufacturers and packaging companies to biodegradable plastics. In countries such as Italy and France, there are restrictions on the use of non-biodegradable plastics bags, which have led to a significant increase in the consumption of biodegradable plastics in packaging and tableware applications. Packaging companies are required to adhere to government regulations to map out their products in the export market.

PLA, starch-based plastics, and PHA are being increasingly used as raw materials for manufacturing food & beverage packaging products due to their ease of disposability, degradability, and recyclability. This has led companies to use green packaging labels as a strategy for branding and customer acquisition. This is leading to the increasing use of biodegradable plastics in packaging & compostable bags applications.

Restraint: Higher prices of biodegradable plastics than conventional plastics

The market’s expansion in many application categories is constrained by the cost of biodegradable plastics, which is greater than that of conventional polymers. Generally, the production cost of biodegradable plastics is 20-80% higher than that of conventional plastics. This is primarily due to the high polymerization cost of biodegradable plastics as most of the processes are still in the development stage and hence, have not achieved economies of scale.

For example, PHAs, which have various applications in binders, synthetic papers, medical devices, electronic parts, food packaging, and agriculture, have high production costs, low yields, and limited availability. PLAs, which have a much lower production cost than PHAs, are still more expensive than petroleum-based PE and PP. In general, bio-based materials are still at the development stage. They have not been commercialized to the same level as their petrochemical counterparts, which have been developing rapidly for more than 50 years.

The cost of biodegradable plastics varies from USD 2/kg to USD 6/kg compared with that of traditional plastics, which is approximately USD 1/kg to USD 2/kg. Higher R&D and production costs due to small-scale production and the significant price difference in comparison to traditional petroleum-based plastics are the key factors, which contribute to the low penetration of biodegradable plastics in various industries.

Opportunity: High potential in emerging countries of APAC

The biodegradable plastics market players are continuously implementing organic and inorganic strategies for their growth. In recent years, the players have made many strategic developments in the emerging countries of APAC. For instance, in 2019, Total Corbion set up a PLA plant in Rayong, Thailand, with a production capacity of 75,000 tons per year. In addition, Indonesia is exploring biodegradable plastic alternatives, such as seaweed.

Evoware, a local Indonesian player, provides patented seaweed-based packaging. The company is producing containers made from seaweed. The regulations related to the environment are expected to increase, which would eventually propel the demand for biodegradable plastics in these countries in the future. Moreover, Southeast Asia is rich in bio-based feedstock required to produce biodegradable plastic as it has local access to sustainable raw materials. Thus, regulations, coupled with the easy availability of feedstock, will, in turn, help sustain the demand for biodegradable plastics during the forecast period.

Challenge:  Fluctuating oil prices create volatility in demand for biodegradable plastics

Biodegradable plastics are usually more expensive than conventional plastics. However, fluctuations in oil prices affect the prices of plastics. This would be a challenge in the long term. However, the temporary increase in oil prices will increase the prices of conventional plastics. This would make biodegradable plastics an attractive alternative as they will have the edge over conventional plastics with respect to price and sustainability. This will be a short-term driver to the biodegradable plastics market. However, the prices of oil may fall with the demand-supply dynamics. This can result in a decrease in the prices of conventional plastics, which would affect the demand for biodegradable plastics.

In terms of value, the consumer goods is projected to account for the second largest share of the biodegradable plastics market, by end-use industry, during the forecast period.

The consumer goods segment accounted for a share of 14.2% in terms of value, of the overall biodegradable plastics market in 2020. The major consumer goods considered under this segment are electrical appliances, domestic appliances, and others. The major consumer goods manufacturers are shifting their focus from traditional plastics to biodegradable plastics to reduce the negative impact on the environment. Biodegradable plastics are used for manufacturing consumer goods such as touch screen computer casings, loudspeakers, mobile casings, and vacuum cleaners.

Focus of governments on green procurement policies and regulations to increase the demand for biodegradable plastics.

The growing need to reduce the dependency on conventional fossil fuels is propelling the demand for bio-based products. This is also supported by the new policies and regulations implemented and adopted by the government bodies globally. These regulations include banning or implementing additional surcharges on the use of conventional plastics in applications, such as shopping bags, packaging materials, and disposables. These increasing regulations and prohibitions against plastic bags and other plastic items are driving the market for bioplastics, especially biodegradable plastics, worldwide.

APAC is expected to be the second fastest-growing market during the forecast period.

Based on region, the biodegradable plastics market has been segmented into APAC, Europe, North America, RoW. The growth of the biodegradable plastics market in APAC is attributed to the easy availability of raw materials used to manufacture biodegradable plastics. The future growth of biodegradable plastics in APAC highly depends on the awareness about the use of biodegradable plastics as a viable alternative to traditional plastics and price reduction. Government regulations in the APAC region regarding plastic bags ban and global warming initiatives help in market growth. Consumer awareness regarding sustainable plastics and the pressure from retailers contribute to the rising demand for bioplastics.
