The OEMs and hardware providers in the connected motorcycle ecosystem were somewhat affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in the initial months of 2020 as well as different times across various countries when the pandemic was at a peak in these countries. Yamaha for instance, suffered losses due to COVID-19 and had to initiate job cuts for a considerable part of its employees in 2020. Driver: Adoption of safety and security features

Different types of motorcycles such as cruisers, adventure bikes, scooters, and sport bikes have different levels of performance, stability, handling, and controls. Riders must be agile and alert while riding as motorcycles provide little protection in case of an accident. Motorcycle accidents have become a major concern for OEMs as well as government and road safety authorities. For instance, in the US, motorcyclists comprise 34% of all traffic fatalities. According to NHTSA, in 2020, out of 5,458 accidents in the US, 76% were riders and 24% were passengers. The collision with fixed objects is another major concern for governments and motorcyclists. Further, in 2020, 34% of the motorcycles had fatal crashes with fixed objects due to rider errors, such as overspeeding, under cornering, running wide on a curve due to excess speed, or a fall due to over braking.

According to NHTSA, motorcycles have more than 10 times the chance of accidents by the number of vehicles driven compared to PCs and light trucks. According to the Connected Motorcycle Consortium, half of the accidents are caused by other vehicle drivers. OEMs such as BMW Motorrad, Honda, Yamaha, KTM, Kawasaki, and Triumph joined the consortium to develop safety features for motorcycles. In the first phase, features such as slow or stationary vehicle warning, road works warning, and emergency electronic brake lights were rolled out in 2020. Other advanced features such as left turn assist, intersection movement assist, motorcycle approach indication, overtaking warning, lane changing warning, and blind spot warning will be rolled out in the upcoming phases. All these features require reliable and advanced connectivity services for V2V and V2I. The inclusion of safety features in the upcoming motorcycles would drive the demand for connectivity services and other related components and software platforms. The consortium is currently working on 16 such projects, involving technology and applications, for the connected motorcycle market.

Restraint: Absence of connected standards and uniform platform

Limited connectivity standards are available for motorcycles. Standard communication or connectivity platform is required for V2I or V2V communications to deliver seamless and reliable connectivity as harmonized technical standard is a must for interoperability. The Car2Car Communication Consortium deployed Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) for connected vehicles, road infrastructure, motorcyclists, and railway equipment in October 2019 across several European countries such as Germany, Slovenia, Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands, and the UK. In the first phase, the consortium deployed initial services including Road Works Warning (RWW), In-Vehicle Signage (IVS), Other Hazardous Location Notifications (OHLN), and Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory (GLOSA). The systems are yet to address a major concern of user data privacy in Europe.

The implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) across all countries to share, track, and protect user data would be instrumental for the deployment of the harmonized connected platform. While major safety features are not rolled out yet and no clear roadmap is in place for future roll-out, the chances of future deployment are fully dependent on the success of the first phase. On the other hand, standard regulations and frameworks for connected vehicles are still in development in countries like China, Japan, and the US. Future adoption of fully connected vehicles or motorcycles will be uncertain till there is a harmonized platform in place.

Opportunity: Advancements in connectivity (cloud & 5G)

With increasing technical developments in cloud platforms and the availability of 5G networks, intelligent instrument clusters are expected to become a standard feature in the premium two-wheeler segment. The availability of a fast and reliable 5G network enables OEMs to process a large volume of real-time data on the cloud. For instance, if a connected car ahead applies brakes or lowers the speed suddenly, the connected motorcycle behind must anticipate that event on time so that the rider can act quickly. Also, other safety features such as brake assistance and collision warning analyze data that demands higher bandwidth and low latency cellular connectivity for the proper functioning of safety features. Hence, OEMs are shifting from onboard processing to cloud-based solutions. Challenge: Privacy and security of user data

The increasing installation of sensors and devices in motorcycles has made the diagnosis process easier than ever before. From a single source, a service center can easily access all vehicle-related information. Also, sensors provide additional services such as music controls, navigation, hands-free calls, and messages. However, the convenience of repair ability and luxury features come with the risk of data privacy and security. The vehicle manufacturer has direct access to telematics data while other service providers need to pay the manufacturer to access the data. Due to the unavailability of standard or neutral entities, additional expenses for service providers incur high development costs, leading to expensive services. On the other hand, independent service stations have no or little access to the data and must rely on the vehicle manufacturer’s business model. As the vehicle manufacturer decides who access the data, it might create a monopoly in the vehicle services market by setting up a price. The manufacturers have a significant cost advantage compared to independent service providers. Thus, they leave no choice for customers who opt for manufacturer garages despite increased charges.

Embedded segment is estimated to account for the largest market during the forecast period

The embedded connectivity system can offer advanced safety features that require onboard GPS, cellular connectivity, and superior control unit to be reliable. For instance, Motorcycle Approach Indication (MAI) is a key feature for riders. This feature relies heavily on the accurate onboard GPS unit and fast communication systems. Embedded hardware is superior to tethered hardware. For real-time safety features, connectivity systems cannot depend on smartphones or any other inferior quality dongles. Hence, embedded hardware will be a preferred choice of motorcycle manufacturers to offer reliable safety features in the future.

Safety systems are expected to be the largest market size during the forecast period

Safety systems in motorcycles are designed to save the lives of riders. OEMs are incorporating safety features in motorcycles for a safe riding experience. However, safety features work with the help of cameras and sensors fitted on the motorcycles. These features analyze data from in-vehicle sensors. Hence, safety features are not useful in case an approaching vehicle is far or is out of sight or visual is blocked by large vehicles. Left turn assist helps riders avoid a collision with oncoming traffic when turning across the opposite driving lane. The rider can easily overlook or misjudge the speed of oncoming traffic. In such a scenario, a fatal accident is inevitable. Meanwhile, the motorcycle approach warning/indication informs other road users that an approaching motorcycle is nearby. The vehicle-to-vehicle communication system collects and analyses real-time vehicle speed and position. The overtake warning system warns the rider not to attempt overtaking as the passing zone is occupied by the oncoming vehicles. The system works with the help of vehicle-to-vehicle communication. It can inform a rider to avoid overtaking when there is an oncoming vehicle. The emergency electronic brake light warning takes the forward collision system one step ahead. The forward collision system uses radars and cameras to detect strong deceleration or sudden braking by preceding traffic.

Increasing initiatives by motorcycle manufacturers and road safety authorities to minimize fatal road accidents would increase the demand for connected safety features. OEMs are proactively including advanced rider assistance systems in their upcoming motorcycles to increase rider safety.
