COVID-19 Impact

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread in the US, logistics and supply chain operations are affected severely, especially in the North American region. Retail, industrial goods, and consumer goods are some of the major industries that are hugely affected by the COVID-19 outbreak in North America. Supply chain disruptions will have both long-term and short-term effects on businesses. Changing government policies and lockdown measures could make it difficult for freight service providers to keep their services running smoothly throughout the country for the coming weeks. This has necessitated companies in the logistics industry to understand the specific demand effects of their business, create a short-term demand synchronization strategy, and prepare for possible channel shifts.

According to a survey by the Supply Chain Media, among 143 supply chain decision-makers in Europe, the COVID-19 pandemic is having a clear impact on the supply chains of virtually all European manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers. Although 78% of them are experiencing a negative short-term impact, 17% are noticing positive effects, and only 5% say they are not affected in any way.

APAC has suffered significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic as it has some of the world’s biggest developing economies. The electronics industry in the APAC region accounts for ~70% of the total worldwide electronics industry. China, being the hub of electronics manufacturing, has witnessed heavy losses in this sector due to COVID-19. The production of electronic devices was suspended because of logistics slowdown and the unavailability of a workforce. Further, several e-commerce companies around the region have stopped supplying non-essentials. Due to the imposition of lockdowns, a trend of reverse migration is observed across the region.

According to a report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), over-reliance on Asian, and especially Chinese suppliers and clients was already a major concern for MEA before the COVID- 19 disruption in 2020, and after the outbreak, MEA businesses are planning to diversify supply chains as well as refocus on local produce where possible.

SMEs account for 80-90% of Latin America businesses. Due to COVID-19, there is a high impact of local/national lockdowns and the economic slowdown on SMEs. For instance, in Chile, an estimated 70% of SMEs are closed. As a result, the Chilean government has launched an initiative “Ap๓yame 2020” (Support Me Here). In this initiative, SMEs are invited to sell their products in the online marketplace, hosted by major retailers.

Market Dynamics

Driver: Exponential growth in the eCommerce industry

The exponential growth of the eCommerce industry over the past decade has been driven by the rise in online shopping and an increase in the number of internet users. This rise in eCommerce activities requires logistics providers to operate faster and more efficiently for rapidly processing small individual orders. Online customers expect order accuracy, same-day or same-hour delivery, and free returns. Several eCommerce companies are exploring new ways to reduce order delivery times and operational costs. The eCommerce industry drives the demand for transparency, affordability, convenience, and speed in delivery as well as compelling frictionless returns. To cater to this need, it is essential to create new business models and solutions by digitalizing the logistics operations, automating material handling systems, warehouse management systems, and distribution management systems. This has ensured faster and varied fulfillment services, especially in terms of last-mile delivery options and seamless returns processes. Logistics automation service agents embedded as conversational interfaces in smart home devices, such as Amazon Alexa help customers with live updates on the status of their package deliveries, allowing them to reschedule the package, and inform well in advance in case of any delays. Several leading eCommerce vendors are investing in the digitalization of their inbound and outbound logistics operations, which, in turn, is expected to drive the growth of the logistics automation market. For instance, Alibaba, apart from its eCommerce activities, is continuously increasing its reach into the logistics realm by heavily investing in building a global logistics network

Restraints: Lack of uniform governance standards

Transportation and logistics businesses worldwide are focused on maximizing supply chain efficiency to enhance profitability and viability. There is a requirement for common governance standards for the logistics industry. As compared to the US and European countries, logistics standardization in Asian countries, such as China and Korea, is limited due to the lack of government involvement and the absence of regional organizations that can actively initiate and unify multinational logistics standardization efforts. A common standardization in logistics management makes it easy and convenient for every vendor to offer a majority of solutions in one package. The lack of uniform governance standards makes it difficult for end users to fully automate the supply chain and logistics operations, thereby acting as a restraint to the growth of the logistics automation market.

Opportunity: Increasing adoption of industry 4.0

Traditional warehouses are transforming into smart, connected, and highly-efficient automated warehouses by integrating Industry 4.0 with warehouse robots. It also allows robots to receive specific instructions and respond to the environment. Industry 4.0 technologies enable warehousing facilities to adapt to significant changes in their businesses. The integration of Industry 4.0 with robotics systems has led to efficient warehouse operations and increased coordination among warehouse systems. This, in turn, has helped warehouse operators perform time-critical and high-velocity operations at a low cost. The integration has further allowed companies to handle a wide range of tasks, such as processing customer orders and delivering products on time. Driven by rapid technological advancements and greater affordability, robotics systems are entering the logistics workforce, supporting zero-defect processes, and boosting productivity. Soon, robotics solutions will continue to become faster, more accurate, flexible, and affordable due to swift progress in grip and sensor technologies.

Challenge: Security and privacy concerns

Enterprises adopting cloud-based logistics automation tools face security and privacy issues. The enterprises possess confidential data that needs to be protected to avoid data breaches and theft as it may affect the reputation of enterprises on the whole. The enterprises’ data may leak over the internet and can be accessed by unauthorized users, which is a growing concern among enterprises. For instance, the cloud-based transportation management system needs multitenant architecture, wherein a single version of the software runs on a server that is shared by multiple customers. Hence, there is a possibility that subscribers of an enterprise can view the data of competitors. These security issues relating to the data access by unauthorized users will likely threaten the enterprise data security and competitive business position, as well. Hence, these issues relating to security and privacy increase the growing concerns among enterprises.

Market Size Estimation

Multiple approaches were adopted to estimate and forecast the market size of the logistics automation market. The first approach involves the estimation of the market size by summing up companies’ revenue generated through the sale of solutions and services. The top-down and bottom-up approaches were used to estimate and validate the size of the market and various other dependent submarkets in the overall market. An exhaustive list of all the vendors who offer services in the logistics automation market was prepared while using the top-down approach. The market revenue for all the vendors in the market was estimated through annual reports, press releases, funding, investor presentations, paid databases, and primary interviews. The aggregate of all companies’ revenues was extrapolated to reach the overall market size. Further, each subsegment was studied and analyzed for its regional market size and country-level penetration. The markets were triangulated through both primary and secondary research. The primary procedure included extensive interviews for key insights from the industry leaders, such as Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), Vice Presidents (VPs), directors, and managers.

Data Triangulation

After arriving at the overall market size using the market size estimation processes as explained above, the market was split into several segments and subsegments. The data triangulation and market breakup procedures were employed, wherever applicable, to complete the overall market engineering process and arrive at the exact statistics of each market segment and subsegment. The data was triangulated by studying various factors and trends from both the demand and supply sides.
