COVID-19 impact on global post-consumer recycled plastics market

Various plastic recycling companies are finding ways to communicate with their customers to help assure them in these difficult times by providing information on their website and social media on how they are tackling the global challenges faced by the company. Various plastics recyclers are not only ensuring the safety and quality of their raw materials but also the health and well-being of their employees. The COVID-19 situation has slowed down the growth of the plastics recycling industry owing to the social distancing and lockdown imposed by various countries across the world. These measures to fight the pandemic have created disruption in the supply & demand chain. The collection, sorting, and recycling process has been hampered owing to the impact of COVID-19 on the industry.

Post-consumer Recycled Plastics Market Dynamics

Driver: Laws & regulations enforced by governments

Governments in various countries have imposed stringent regulations to minimize the impact of waste and its harmful by-products, for the safety of the environment, flora, and fauna. They have also enforced strict laws for the management of consumer and industrial plastic waste to reduce solid waste accumulating in landfills. Regulatory bodies in the US and European countries impose fines for the non-compliance of standards and acts. The Waste Framework Directive by the European Commission has set a 50% household waste collection target by 2020. According to this directive, recycling and reuse of plastic packaging waste should be 60% of the total plastic packaging waste generated between 2020 and 2030. PlasticsEurope, a leading pan-European association, has an objective of zero landfills by 2040. The Waste (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2012 is related to the separate collection of waste, which states that the waste collection authorities must collect waste paper, metal, plastic, and glass separately.

Restraint: Low participation of the residential sector in the management of plastic waste

Plastic waste management is a cyclical framework, which involves processes such as identification of sources, waste collection & segregation, recycling, reuse, and disposal. There are various sources of plastic waste, which include residential, industrial, and commercial & institutional. The sources play an important role in this entire framework of plastic waste recycling and disposal through responsible handling of the waste generated. The contribution of these sources adds significant value to the entire process and impacts it adversely in case of non-compliance.

Opportunity: Rising demand   for plastic waste management from emerging economies

The demand for plastic waste in developed economies, such as North America and Europe, has become saturated. The collection, transportation, and disposal of waste in developing countries are not organized. Waste is often dumped in the outskirts of towns and cities, which leads to overflowing landfills. While the North American and European markets have reached saturation for growth, markets such as Brazil, India, Argentina, South Africa, Nigeria, and Middle Eastern countries are growing. These countries provide profitable growth opportunities for the plastic waste management industry, which is projected to drive the post-consumer recycled plastic market.

Challenge:  Difficulty in managing the supply chain

Various participants of the supply chain, such as municipalities, are under constant pressure to lower the costs incurred in this process, which has become a major challenge. Other challenges include simplifying the supply chain mechanism and increasing process efficiency. Economies of scale and competitive advantage are difficult to achieve and can only be done through an integrated, collaborative, cooperative, and long-term approach to the supply chain by the parties involved.

Stringent regulations and increasing initiatives leading to the increase in recycling rates

Recycling, by service, accounted for the largest market share in the post-consume recycled plastics market. The recycling process of consumer plastic waste involves sorting, cleaning & drying, shredding & agglomeration, pelletizing, and finally, manufacturing recycled products. In the case of developing countries such as India, much of the waste collected from residential areas is not sorted before it is collected, which makes the recycling of consumer plastic wastes difficult. However, in developed countries, consumer plastic waste is sorted and deposited in containers; sorting also takes place after the waste is collected. In this stage, recovered plastic waste is segregated into different grades either by SPI code or by the type of plastic, additives, and fillers used. The segregation is done as different types of plastics require different treatment, while recycling them to make different types of products.

Increasing use of PP in packaging applications making it the fastest-growing polymer

PP, by polymer type, is estimated to be the fastest-growing segment in the post-consumer recycled plastics market from 2020 to 2025, in terms of volume. Products made from PP offer high stiffness, heat resistance, steam barrier properties (food protection), elasticity (film and fiber applications), enhanced transparency, strong impact & rigidity balance. The resistance of PP to permeation is equivalent to or marginally better than that of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and superior to low-density polyethylene (LDPE). It is recyclable and reused in various applications besides manufacturing plastics. These properties have led to an increasing preference for PP in the manufacture of packaging units used in the food & beverage, pharmaceutical, electronic, and packaging industries. Few packaging applications include bottles, crates, films, and pots.

APAC region to lead the global post-consumer recycled plastics market by 2025

The APAC region is projected to lead the post-consumer recycled plastics market, in terms of both value and volume from 2020 to 2025. The growing population, rising GDP, and increasing disposable income in APAC are leading to the generation of more solid waste, which, in turn, is creating opportunities for plastic recycling in the region. According to the OECD Development Centre’s Medium Term Projection Framework (MPF-2019), GDP in the emerging Asian region is projected to grow by an annual average of 6.1% between 2020 and 2025.
