Market Size

The ventilator market size is projected to reach USD 5.4 billion in 2027, at a CAGR of 6.3%

Market Growth

In recent years, the ventilators market has evolved significantly due to technological advancements, such as the development of advanced portable ventilators and improvements in the sensor technologies used in ventilators. The increasing number of preterm births, rapid growth in the geriatric population, rising prevalence of respiratory diseases, growing preference for home-based oxygen therapy, and the outbreak of infectious diseases affecting the respiratory system are expected to drive market growth. The emergence of home healthcare has expanded growth opportunities for the ventilators market. However, shortage of skilled medical workers and the excessive purchase of ventilators are factors expected to restrain the market growth to a certain extent in the coming years.

Ventilators Market Growth Dynamics

Drivers: Urbanization and rising pollution levels

Exposure to indoor & outdoor air pollutants and allergens is a major risk factor for chronic respiratory diseases. These risks are largely due to smoke and pollutants released by vehicles and industries in cities. Intense and prolonged exposure to dust in industrial operations (especially in coal mining, gold mining, and cotton textile operations) and exposure to chemicals such as cadmium, isocyanates, and fumes from welding cause airflow obstruction; this is prevalent in even non-smokers.

As per the WHO, around 91% of the world’s population resides in areas where air quality exceeds WHO guidelines. Exposure to indoor pollution results in severe health outcomes in children and adults, such as stroke, ischemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. These pollutants can adversely affect the respiratory system and cause cancer & eye diseases, such as conjunctivitis, glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Every year, 4.2 million people die from ambient pollution worldwide (Source: WHO). Moreover, 3.8 million people die from household exposure to smoke from fuels and dirty cookstoves (Source: WHO). Such numbers are expected to increase the demand for respiratory care devices.

Restraints: Excessive purchase of ventilators during COVID-19

Due to the surge in the purchase of ventilators in 2020, some hospitals will not need new ventilators in the coming years, as the life span is ~7-8 years. According to the Medical Device Network, in 2020, the global market for critical care and transport ventilators increased by over 300% due to a sudden surge in demand for treating COVID-19 patients. In April 2020, Koninklijke Philips N.V. (Netherlands) and the US government collaborated to give rapid access to critical materials and components and logistics and regulatory approvals to rapidly increase ventilator production. Similarly, the Ministry of Health Argentina bought all the available ventilators. The government directed the two local ventilator manufacturing companies in Argentina—Leistung Engineering Pvt. Ltd. and Tecme SA—to halt all exports and sell all their products to the government. According to the Ministry of Health in India, to supplement the country's ventilator support resources for COVID-19 patients, the central government sourced 10,000 ventilators from China and placed orders for 40,000 ventilators to be produced domestically (March 2020). Orders for ventilators were also signed with global firms such as Hamilton Medical (Switzerland), Shenzhen Mindray Bio-Medical Electronics Co., Ltd. (China), and Drδgerwerk AG & CO. KGAA (Germany), as well as Indian automobile manufacturers.

Opportunities: Cost efficiency of home care services

The increasing healthcare costs have driven a shift in patient preference for home-based treatments. Products such as nebulizers, ventilators, and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices are used by patients to treat, diagnose, and monitor various respiratory diseases in home care settings. These devices, along with home care services, provide cost-effective healthcare to patients.

The rapid growth in the global geriatric population, rising incidence of respiratory diseases (including COPD and asthma), and the cost-effective nature of home care devices and services (compared to hospital visits) are the key factors driving the home healthcare market. Moreover, the high growth potential in emerging markets, healthcare decentralization, and the evolution of miniaturized devices are the other major factors expected to provide significant growth opportunities to players offering ventilation products and services for home care settings.

Challenges: Harmful effects of certain respiratory devices on neonates

Mechanical ventilators provide respiratory care to neonates; however, these devices can also cause chronic lung injury that may result in bronchopulmonary dysplasia (a major complication in preterm babies) and bronchial intubation, which are the common causes of mortality during ventilator assistance. There have been cases where mechanical ventilation has led to blindness among preterm babies due to excess oxygen. Companies are using surfactants to reduce the harmful effects of ventilation and prevent infection. They are also educating healthcare professionals on the appropriate use of these devices to decrease the harmful effects of ventilation.

Noninvasive ventilation techniques such as nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) are preferred over invasive ventilation to reduce these complications. However, most vulnerable infants may still require intubation and invasive mechanical ventilation. Despite the availability of advanced neonatal ventilators, invasive mechanical ventilation remains a risk and can lead to bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).

Low- and middle-income countries lack specialized respiratory care infrastructure for infants. The unavailability of specialized ventilators for infants or adult ventilators as an alternative to infant respiratory devices results in numerous infant deaths. Also, these countries lack awareness about technological advancements and developments in neonatal ventilators.

Based on type, the high-end ICU ventilators segment accounted of the intensive care ventilators market

In 2021, the high-end ICU ventilators segment accounted of the intensive care ventilators market. The demand for high-end ICU ventilators largely comes from large hospitals in developed countries. The high costs of these restrict greater adoption in small and mid-size hospitals with limited ICU beds. However, improving healthcare infrastructure and rising healthcare expenditure in developing countries are expected to drive the market for high-end ICU ventilators.

Based on mode, the combined-mode ventilators segment will grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period

The combined-mode ventilators segment will continue to dominate the market in 2027, growing at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. Companies are now focusing on manufacturing combined-mode ventilators as it offers the benefits of pressure control ventilation with lowest inspiratory pressure for all breaths, better oxygenation, along with the security of consistent tidal volume.

Based on end user, home care settings segment will grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period

In 2021, home care settings segment will grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. Technological advancements in ventilation devices have enabled the development of compact and lightweight devices that are easier to carry and operate. These advancements, coupled with increasing awareness and acceptance of home care devices among patients, are expected to propel the growth of the home care settings segment during the forecast period.
