Blowing agents are defined as a chemical substance capable of producing pores or cells in polymeric compositions. They are widely used in generating the gas to expand rubber, plastics and ceramics to create foam. The raw materials used in fluorine based blowing agents are hydrogen fluoride and chlorocarbons. Hydrogen fluoride is prepared from fluorspar and sulfur and is main source of fluorine for all the fluorochemicals. Chlorocarbons such as methyl chloride, methylene chloride, chloroform, and others are obtained from reaction of methanol. Hydrogen fluoride is reacted with Chlorocarbons to make HCFCs and HFCs.
