Dimethyl ether (DME) is an organic compound with molecular formulae CH3OCH3 and a clean burning hydrocarbon fuel with no carbon-carbon bond. It is the simplest ether and is a gas in normal state. It is colorless and non poisonous if inhaled by humans. Dimethyl Ether is commercially manufactured by first converting coal or natural gas to syn gas, which is converted to methanol in presence of a catalyst. Methanol is then dehydrated to form DME as an end product. A significant portion of DME is also manufactured by simply dehydrating marketed methanol in order to avoid huge plant establishment cost. The uses of DME vary by regions. In general, it is used for blending in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in a pre-defined proportion to improve its burning properties and also to reduce the deficit of LPG in various countries. It is also used as an aerosol propellant, as an acetylene substitute for welding & brazing applications and as a precursor to other chemical compounds. Dimethyl ether has potential to replace diesel and can also be employed for power generation due to its clean burning properties.

The global market for dimethyl ether has grown significantly during the past few years and is expected to grow at a more rapid pace in the next five years, mainly driven by growing demand in the Asia-Pacific region. China consumed more than 90.0% of the global dimethyl ether demand in 2012, which was majorly for fuel applications. The dimethyl ether market in other countries is emerging from past years and is expected to grow significantly in the future. Various countries like South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Sweden, Egypt, and Trinidad & Tobago have their own respective focus to develop DME market by producing domestically or by sourcing it from other countries. Currently, the production facilities are majorly concentrated in China, with few capacities in Japan, Germany, The Netherlands, and U.S. etc.

This study basically aims to estimate the global market of dimethyl ether for 2013 and to project the expected demand of the same in 2018 & 2023. Dimethyl ether (DME): 6,500.6 kilo tons market by 2018 signify firm annualized growth rate of 12.9% from 2013 to 2023

The global dimethyl ether market has been witnessing lot of developments over the past few years. DME is a preferred and widely accepted alternative fuel due to its clean burning properties and the focus of various regulatory bodies to reduce the dependence on oil & gas by-products for meeting the current and future energy needs. DME consumption has grown significantly is the recent times and is at an emerging stage in various countries with sufficient coal deposits and rising energy deficit.

Currently, China is the single largest consumer of DME, consuming more than 90.0% of the total global consumption. The country has huge installed plant capacities of DME with its plants running on quite low operating rates. The dimethyl ether market is emerging in various countries like Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Sweden, etc due to high deficits of LPG & increasing diesel consumption. Also, ministerial will to reduce import dependence on various domestic and commercial fuels is expected to drive the dimethyl ether market in future.

Currently, a huge volume of DME is blended with LPG, which is further expected to increase as per the current focus of various countries in Asia-Pacific. There have been various DME plant announcements in recent times; still the huge gap between the potential DME demand and its supply is expected to persist. The long term growth of dimethyl ether market is expected to be driven by its application as a diesel substitute and as a fuel for power generation. Various regulatory bodies are already intensifying there R&D efforts, so as to develop DME as a diesel substitute on a commercial scale. Western Europe is a mature market of dimethyl ether where it is only employed as an aerosol propellant and this segment is growing at a low CAGR.

Due to unavailability of trading norms and export infrastructure of DME, it is hardly traded among the countries. Various DME manufacturers in China have huge plant capacities, but are operating their plants at quite low operating rates due to the same reason. By 2018, it is expected that these limitations may be lifted by intense governmental efforts and countries like Papua New Guinea, Saudi Arabia, and China may start exporting DME to other countries. The key manufacturers of DME are China Energy Ltd (Singapore), ENN Group Company Ltd (China) or XinAo Group, Korea Gas Corp (South Korea), Guanghui Energy Co. Ltd (China), etc.
