Advanced energy storage is an important element with respect to the future electrical needs and energy efficiency measures. Conventionally, electricity is consumed soon after being generated as there are no effective technologies to store electricity in the required quantities. With emerging technologies, this phenomenon is improving with continuously improved energy densities and capital costs. Although, pumped hydro storage technology, which is more than 100 years old and by far the most prominent of all available technologies, is operational across the world, it still depends on the availability of natural resources (water bodies) for being set up limiting the scope of application.

Numerous technologies, other than pumped hydro storage with different capabilities, are now in the market with continuous research and development in progress. These include compressed air energy storage, batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, and flywheels. Emerging and developing technologies include hydrogen storage, super magnets and synthetic gas.

Pumped hydro storage technology, relatively, has longer discharge times and longer life, and are hence more widely used in the grid storage for load balancing and peak shaving. Similarly, NaS batteries are also used for load balancing and time sharing. Other systems, such as flywheels, that have shorter discharge times are used in frequency regulation on the grid. Also, the advancement of lithium-ion batteries, in terms of cost reduction and efficiency improvement, is driving the electric vehicles market, globally.

The energy storage technologies market is gaining importance since the last three years due to growing power requirements. This growth in the market is largely fueled by growing portable electronics, hybrid vehicles, and smart grid market. Batteries constitute a major share among the other energy storage technologies. Lithium ion batteries are the most promising and emerging technology that are widely used in electronics application due to high energy density. Lithium ion batteries are also being developed for stationary and transportation applications and expected to face rapid adoption in these segments from 2012 onwards. Nickel-based batteries are witnessing growth due to their utilization in hybrid vehicles. Super capacitors market is growing due to their hybridization with batteries to boost their performance. Flywheel technology is being developed by companies such as Active Power (U.S.) and Beacon Power Corporation (U.S.) for off grid (UPS) and on grid usage respectively. The market for energy storage technologies is regionally concentrated; .i.e. battery production is dominated by countries such as China, Japan, and South Korea. It is also observed that most of the research and development in battery space is occurring in these regions based on the number of patents filed. Asia is the largest market for energy storage technologies as of 2010 and is expected to remain one of the largest markets by 2016.

The major applications of energy storage technologies analyzed in the report are electronics (portable), stationary, and transportation.
