UV Curing Adhesive Market by Chemistry, by Application, by Region (North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Rest of the World) - Global Forecast to 2019
UV Curing adhesives, a type of light curing adhesives, cure in very less time when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. They offer a convenient solution for quickly curing a product in a variety of applications. These adhesives are advantageous over other types of adhesives as they are fast curing and have exceptional stability, even in difficult environments. Moreover, these are a single part product with low VOC emission and good-looking finishing appearance. Rapid curing can also minimize material consumption and decrease production cost. It can be made of different chemistries urethanes, acrylics, silicone or epoxies. The choice of a particular chemistry depends on the requirements of a specific application. UV cure adhesives help to bond a number of difficult to assemble products and are well suited for assembling substrates with different thermal expansions. These are widely used in the manufacturing of glass (glass wares, glass furniture, acrylic glass), optical, medical, and electronics products.
The fast curing and effective performance of UV adhesives is dependent on choosing the correct light source. Some of the significant parameters of light source that is required for proper curing are power, spectral, output, distance to the substrate, and age of the light source.
UV curing adhesives are widely used in the medical industry for device assembly. These adhesive are used in the manufacturing of medical equipments and items such as syringes, catheters, blood filters, and so on. The adhesives used in the medial industry needs to be tested and certified with the commonly accepted standards. These adhesives must also be able to withstand harsh sterilization techniques such as autoclaving. However, a disadvantage of UV curing adhesive is these can withstand only limited number of sterilization cycles. Thus, currently these adhesives are mostly used in dispensable devices which are sterilized only few times. Companies like Mater Bond are trying to overcome this drawback by developing optimized chemistry and improving cross-linking.
In the electronic industry, UV curing adhesives are applied for circuit protection and electronic assembly. These are used for potting, encapsulation, wire tacking, and coil termination. Sometimes, UV curing adhesives may also provide thermally conductive properties.
The UV curing adhesive market is projected to show a significant growth rate in the coming years. The growth of the end industries, especially medical and electronics industry is going to drive the demand of UV curing adhesive. The demand in Asia-Pacific region will rise due to increased manufacturing of electronic products along with the upsurge in medical device manufacturing in the region. North America is an important region in the medical device manufacturing sector and thus consumes significant amount of UV curing adhesive for medical application. The market is innovation driven and investments are expected for new technology and product development. Besides large adhesive manufacturers, there are many medium- and small-sized manufacturers in this market. Some of the major players are 3M, Henkel, Dymax Corporation, ITW Devcon, MasterBond, and Permabond.
