The core strength of the key players were new product launches and product approvals followed by mergers & acquisitions to cement their presence in the herbicides market. Players such as BASF SE (Germany) and E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (U.S.) have successfully gained market share by introducing new products in the market and with strategic mergers & acquisitions.

BASF SE (Germany) has been consistent in providing crop protection products and is one of the major player in the herbicides market. BASF SE (Germany) partnered with Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (Embrapa) (Brazil) and launched “Cultivance” in 2015. It is a production system that combines genetically altered soybean cultivars and the use of “Soyvance Pré,” an herbicide for the control of grass weeds and large leaf. The two companies invested USD 33 million into developing the new system. The company also established a new research & development center in Limburgerhof, Germany. The center will be a useful resource in expertise for solutions in chemistry and biology to farmers around the globe. As a result, BASF is boosting its potential to develop innovations beyond classical crop protection. The new R&D center will also boost BASF’s global network of research & development sites as well as trial centers in all regions it operates in that are dedicated to developing seed solutions and biologicals-based crop protection.

E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (U.S.) has strengthened its position through product launches and major acquisitions in the last few years. The company launched a new product named Canopy Blend herbicide in 2015. It aids in effective burndown and residual control of challenging weeds prior to or during soybean planting. In 2015, the company acquired Taxon Biosciences, Inc. (U.S.). This acquisition is expected to give an impetus to the microbial discovery programs of DuPont. The company also launched a “BOLT” technology in 2015 to help in managing difficult-to-control weeds in Pioneer brand soybean. It is also expected to have better tolerance to DuPont Leadoff and DuPont Basis Blend, thus enhancing the control of weed.
