Machine Vision Systems & Components Market Analysis & Forecast (2013-2018)

Machine vision, also known as "industrial vision" or "vision systems", is primarily focused on computer vision in the perspective of industrial manufacturing processes like defect detection; and in non-manufacturing processes like traffic control and healthcare purposes.

The first machine with cyclopean vision which captured the attention of human race was HAL9000,the primary antagonist in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), a science fiction novel by Arthur C. Clarke which was concurrently made into a movie by Stanley Kubrick, the doyen of English movie world.

Like Androids which have come a long way from the three laws of robotics propounded by Isaac Asimov,(i)Machines have started to follow a similar but unique trajectory by evolving  from a mere figment of imagination of a febrile mind to a tangible device which executes human work  like surveillance, defect detection, code reading and verification, part sorting and identification,non-contact measurementsetc. with far greater precision and accuracy. The aforementioned applications are pebbles and stones while the vast of ocean of machine vision still remains unknown and unexplored, which is the characteristic of any nascent market.

The Machine Vision Systems & Components Market industry is a segment of the larger industry characterized as electronic imaging.(i)Machines are  products associated with the segment of electronic imaging dealing with the use of computers to operate on acquired images.Machine vision techniques are being adopted in other fringe applications, such as biometrics/access control, traffic control, and in the automotive after-market.

Quality is the byword in the manufacturing vertical, be it of the product or process. Through Six Sigma, developed by Motorola, championed by  GE ,companies seeks to improve the quality of process outputs by identifying and removing the causes of defects (errors) and minimizing variability in manufacturing and business processes. By understanding Joseph Juran’s trilogy they understand the cost of poor quality prodcuts. (i)Machines can act as the ideal facilitator in helping companies obtain the holy grail called “QUALITY”. For example they can search for manufacturing defects on flat panel televisions, LCD monitors and all other kinds of displays during the production process. By introducing automated imaging systems in the production process of solar cell manufacturing the benefits we obtain are higher production yields and lower scrap values, and end-users will benefit from higher efficiency, longer life and lower maintenance costs of products and buildings where solar cell panels are an integrated part.

In automotive sector, they are being used for such applications as inspecting for gap and flushness measurements on cars being repaired after crashes, inspecting for wheel alignment, verifying headlight aiming, and verifying color match properties. BMW has developed a technology called NIGHT VISION which ensures more safety at night. BMW Night Vision with Dynamic light spot detects pedestrians in the dark even from a long distance – and selectively illuminates them.

Motion analysis is another fringe application of machine vision.Motion analysis systems are being deployed for analyzing machinery and robots for accuracy, aswell as humans for prosthesis fitting, rehabilitative purposes, and athletic conditioning such as golf swings and diving.

Gutenberg’s invention of printing press left so many scribes jobless. But, it did kickstart the movement called renaissance which led to industrial revolution which utilized human capital for more productive purposes than being a mere human copying machine. Analogously, machine vision is slated to replace the dispensable human resources from jobs which require consistent monitoring and quick reactions to situations. These machines are veritably called (i)MACHINES as they can both see and act intelligently.
