Protein Hydrolysis Enzymes Market - New Revenue Pockets

Microorganisms: Largest Source of Protease Enzymes

Microorganisms are the largest source of protease enzymes. They represent an attractive source of enzymes as they can be cultured in large quantities in a relatively short period by established methods of fermentation. Plants, animals, and microorganisms are the three main sources used for the production of proteases, out of which microbial proteases hold the first position, including both bacteria and fungi. Plant, as source for raw material, is the least preferred because it depends on various factors, such as the availability of land for cultivation and the suitability of climatic conditions for growth. Production of protease enzymes from plants is time consuming and the yield is very low.

The level of enzyme activity produced by an organism from a natural environment is often low and needs to be elevated for industrial applications. Therefore, mutation of the enzyme is opted by the manufacturer to elevate the enzyme activity levels.

Asia-Pacific & Row: Growing Markets; North America A Market Leader

North America leads the global protease enzymes market with wide applications in the detergent and cleaning industry. The consumption pattern and developed economy in North America have played a significant role in triggering the usage of protease enzymes over the years. The U.S. is the largest consumer of protease enzymes and it has almost reached maturation, whereas Canada and Mexico show a healthy growth rate. Europe holds the second-largest market share of the protease enzymes market; Germany being the topmost. Western European countries’ protease detergent market has almost reached saturation while Eastern European countries have a lot of untapped potential.

Developing countries in Asia-Pacific and Rest of the world (ROW) show a lot of untapped potential for the growth of the protease enzymes market. As the detergent and cleaning industry is modernizing and developing in these countries, the consumers are exploring new products which are convenient to use. China is the world’s second-largest market for protease enzymes. The protease enzymes market in China is growing at a faster rate and accounts for one-tenth of the global market. The developed markets such as North America and Western Europe have almost reached maturation for the protease enzymes detergent market and thereby offer faster growth in the developing markets of Asia-Pacific and Latin America. In China, the largest segment of the protease market is the detergent application accounting for over 35% share. From 2014 to 2019, consumption of protease enzymes in China is expected to grow at a CAGR of about 6.0%, reaching $272.6 million by 2019. Chinese consumers are increasingly able to afford items ranging from advanced laundry detergent products to foods with higher-quality ingredients.

Detergents & Pharmaceuticals Dominate the Protease Enzymes Application Market

Protease finds its major applications in the detergent industry both in terms of volume and value. These enzymes replace the chemicals that are used in detergents. Proteases used in detergent formulations have high activity and stability over a broad range of pH and temperatures. Other major applications that use protease enzymes are pharmaceuticals and food industries.

The use of proteases in laundry detergents accounts for approximately 25% of the total worldwide sales of enzymes. The largest market for detergents is the laundry industry, amounting to a worldwide production of 13.5 billion tons per year. All detergent proteases currently used in the market are serine proteases produced by Bacillus strains. Fungal alkaline proteases are advantageous due to the ease of downstream processing to prepare a microbe-free enzyme. Applications of detergent proteases have grown substantially and the largest application is found in household laundry detergent formulations.

The wide diversity and specificity of proteases are used to a great advantage in developing effective therapeutic agents. The future of protease enzymes in the pharmaceutical industry shows a positive growth in forthcoming years
