Biocatalysts are enzymes or micro-organisms that help in chemical reactions. Biocatalysts themselves do not take part in the reaction and remains unchanged at the end of reaction. Biocatalysts offer certain advantages over chemical synthesis processes. Enzymes are highly chemoselective, regioselective, and stereoselective. Biocatalysis offers high yield and purity at low costs. As enzymes are highly selective in nature, they usually yield enantiomeric excess of over 99% and hence are important for the manufacturing intermediates and active ingredients for the pharmaceutical industry. They can act under mild conditions and can be adapted to organic solvents. Besides these advantages, enzymes provide safe work environment and are environment friendly.

Biocatalysts can be divided into 6 types - oxidoreductases, transferases, hydrolases, lyases, isomerases, and ligases. Oxidoreductases include enzymes such as catalase and glucose oxidase. An example of transferases is glucosyltransferases. Hydrolases include amylases, proteases, lipases, cellulases, pectinases, and phytases. These three types are the major ones. The other three types contain enzymes such as pectate lyases, glucose isomerases and are less used in the industry currently.

Biocatalysis has replaced chemical synthesis processes and chemicals in a variety of industries such as starch processing, biofuel production, detergent industry, food and beverages industry, and pharmaceuticals industry. Amylase, cellulase, and xylanes are used in the starch processing and biofuel industry for saccharification and starch liquefaction. Enzymes such as proteases, lipases, amylases and cellulases are used in the detergent industry for stain removal. In the food and beverages industry, enzymes are used for different functions in the bakery, dairy, and beverages segment. Biocatalysts are also used in the agriculture & feed, textile, leather, pulp & paper, and personal care industry.
