Client Consult Problem Statement:

MnM’s client was interested in knowing the Cost Analysis of Hydrogen production methods globally. The key objectives of the study were to estimate the cost involved both capital and operating in the production of hydrogen through various methods and to determine the cheapest method of producing hydrogen by taking economies of scale into consideration. Also the client was interested to know the regional overview and the cost of various factors involved for each method like Feedstock cost, Power cost, Labour costs and Leasing costs etc.

1. Methodology Adopted by MnM:

MnM carried out this study through a combination of extensive secondary research backed by multiple primary interviews with various industry leaders across the value chain globally. MnM analyzed both capital and operating costs for Steam Methane Reforming, Partial Oxidation, Coal gasification and Electrolysis of water methods. MnM provided the cost involved in each method by taking three different plant size into consideration which helped into identification of the cheaper method for production of hydrogen. In total, MnM conducted 7 primary discussions to know the industry experts view on the cost of each method.

2. Actual Solution Provided:

Through this granular study, MnM analyzed the cost of each method and the various factors of capital and operating costs and derived to an outcome that Steam Methane Reforming is the cheapest method of producing hydrogen compared to all method followed by partial oxidation and coal gasification.
