Soy bean is processed into three kinds such as soy protein isolates (~90% protein), soy protein concentrates (~70% protein), and soy flour (~50% protein). Soy protein ingredients are the ideal ingredients for meat processing industry and also for infant formulations. These are equipped with a complete amino acid profile, are embraced for its health benefits, and are versatile due to its functional properties. As result of this, these are used as stabilizer, emulsifier, tenderizer, binder, gel, and thickener in food and beverage processing. Soy proteins carry all the essential amino acids. Soy is generally high in calcium and is used to treat osteoporosis. FDA has declared that soy can reduce the cholesterol level. These are also rich in fiber, polyunsaturated fats and lecithin, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin B. Soy protein ingredients are considered as environmentally friendly as these require less amount of water. These are a very good substitute to animal protein and cheaper too, hence play an essential role in animal welfare and are known to be eco-friendly.

This market is driven by the nutritive, functionally properties, and the health benefits achieved. The largest market for the soy protein ingredients is in the North American region, whereas Asia-Pacific market is predictable to register best growth opportunities. Moreover, China and India will be the fastest-growing country in global soy protein ingredients market as its strong economic growth continues. Latin America is the second fastest growing region and Brazil is the major market for soy protein ingredients. North America and European regions are expected to show moderate growth rate from 2012 to 2017.

We have used various secondary sources such as encyclopedia, directories, and databases to identify and collect information useful for this extensive commercial study of this market. Soy protein ingredients market is at a prime focus in the food industry for its health benefits and functional properties. It is known as ‘cheaper animal protein substitute’. This market has a faster growth rate, compared to other vegetable protein. Soy protein isolates and concentrates are the processed versions of soybean, these are the outcome of most innovative technologies. Soy protein isolates is the most eminent ingredient, which provides a higher quality protein approximately 90% and good PDCAAS (Protein Digestibility Amino Acid Score) value. Soy protein concentrates has 70% protein content approximately. These are cheaper than soy protein isolates, but still food manufacturers opt for soy protein isolates due to its high nutritional profile and low sugar-fat content. Soy protein concentrates slightly retain the nutty flavor of soybean, however isolates are with bland taste; and this flavor is considered as undesirable by the food manufacturers. Textured soy protein (TSP), known as “poor man’s meat”, made from soy flour contains 50% soy protein. Soy flour is gluten free, hence mostly used in gluten free foods.

Soy Proteins Ingredients Market

Source: MarketsandMarkets Analysis

The global soy protein market majorly occupied by North America and Asia-Pacific region is showing fastest growth. North America comprises world’s largest soy protein ingredients manufacturers like DuPont-Solae LLC, ADM Inc., and Cargill Inc. Most of the Associations and Education Institutes are working on soy health benefits and processing reside in U.S. Europeans are aware about the health as well as organoleptic benefits of soy protein ingredients, hence the inclusion rate of soy protein ingredients in the diet is more. They are rejecting the use of GMO soy protein ingredients in food; due to this the import of soy meal from North America and Latin America has been reduced. Asia is the biggest market for traditional soy food, but in terms of consumption of soy protein ingredients it stands last. Oceanic regions like Australia and New Zealand are consuming large amount of soy protein isolates in the form of soymilk, soy beverages, energy bars, and meat alternatives.

The market is driven by the functional properties of soy protein ingredients. Due to this, soy protein ingredients have a versatile applications segment, and more researches are carried to find newer applications. Soy protein ingredients provide essential amino acids profile, which is necessary for the long term human health. It has low sugar, low fat content, and contains isoflavones which is beneficial to health. These ingredients are environmental friendly as these save water resources and provide high energy. Currently soy protein ingredients industry has limitations such as allergic nature of soy and anti-nutritional factors; manufacturers are working to reduce this. DuPont-Solae (U.S.), ADM Inc. (U.S.), Cargill Inc. (U.S.), Solbar Ltd (Israel), Linly Shansong Biological (China), and Fuji oil Co. Ltd (Japan) are the major player in this market.
