Increasing health conscious population with rise in demand for nutritional food augment the demand for soy protein ingredients market, to cross the mark of USD 12.84 billion by 2022

Soy protein concentrate (SPC) and soy protein isolate (SPI) are produced by processing soymeal to obtain ingredients with higher protein concentrations, which can be used as a source of protein in a range of food and animal feed applications. The resulting concentrate and isolate contain 65 to 90% protein, respectively, and are used as ingredients to enhance other food products. They are usually heat treated when processed, in order to inactivate enzymes and kill pathogenic microorganisms; they have a shelf life of two years.

SPC and SPI are highly digestible sources of plant-based protein. Given their high level of amino acids, they are appropriate, as an ingredient in foods, for people with high protein needs for growth, in times of extreme food insecurity or due to chronic diseases.  They are nearly carbohydrate- and fat-free, have few properties that affect taste or flavor, and can enrich the texture of foods. They can be fortified with a variety of vitamins and minerals, and are used as functional ingredients in a range of soy-fortified food aid products. The products are commercially used as ingredients in food products, as well as in nutritional supplements, nutritional beverages, meat products, soups and sauces, biscuits and protein bars, cereals and baked goods.

The global soy protein ingredients market size is projected to reach USD 12.84 billion by 2022, largely owing to its varied functions and end uses as food, supplement, and feed. Soy protein ingredient is a cheaper source of protein, and a preferred alternative to meat and dairy proteins. It is also a rich source of several essential nutrients. Hence, with increasing health expenditure and rise in demand for nutritional food, especially for the growth of children, the demand for soy protein ingredient is also expected to grow exponentially in the coming years. However, the demand for clear protein beverages, which are formulated with either whey or plant-based protein concentrates, could steepen this upward trajectory of soy protein ingredients market.

Presence of anti - nutritional components in soy protein along with ban on soy products of GM origin, act as major restraining factors for the soy protein ingredients market

Soybean is rich in nutrient content such as vitamins, minerals, isoflavones, and proteins. Apart from these nutritional components, there are a few anti-nutritional components that are broken down only during heat treatment and fermentation, but are retained during regular cooking. These components have been known to cause health issues such as allergic reactions. One of the major anti-nutritional components is Kunitz STI (soybean trypsin inhibitor), which can trigger quick allergic reactions in the body. Even in animals, Kunitz STI may affect the pancreas, if the diet is high in soy protein. Protease (trypsin) inhibitors cause pancreatic hypertrophy/hyperplasia, which ultimately inhibits growth by preventing the breakdown of proteins.

Soy proteins have large quantities of phytic acid, which has the potential to block the absorption of essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, and zinc. Therefore, vegetarians who consume tofu as an alternative to meat and dairy proteins are prone to mineral deficiency.

In animal feed, soy protein is one of the major sources of protein; however, including soy protein in the daily diet has resulted in higher risk of diarrhea in young animals such as young piglets and day-old chickens, as they have sensitive digestive tracts. Stress during the weaning period increases their digestive sensitivity further. This increases the cost of medical treatment through greater requirement for antibiotics. Such factors are expected to restrain the growth of the soy protein ingredients market.

Further, scientists have cited many health and environmental risks associated with genetically modified (GM) soybean. Given that, several countries in the European Union have banned cultivating genetically modified crops. Moreover, certain food manufacturers in the US, Canada, Europe, and Japan are demanding non-genetically modified (non-GMO) soybean. Further, the organizations in regions such as the Asia Pacific and Europe have made it mandatory to declare genetic modification of food ingredients through labels on the packaging of all processed foods. Developing countries such as India have brought into effect the rule that requires food products that are GM-based to mention the same on packaged labels. European countries such as Germany and the UK have made the inclusion of “GMO/non-GMO” mentions on the labels of dairy and processed meat products a mandate. Such factors may affect the soy protein ingredient market in near future.

Soy Protein Ingredients Market

Leading soy protein ingredients manufacturers are developing innovative solutions for existing and new applications of soy protein to drive the industry forward

Feed Industry: Soy protein ingredients are the rich source of protein, and are widely used as milk replacers in livestock feed

The importance of nutritional diets for animals is increasing, owing to the rise in demand for high-quality animal products such as meat, dairy, and other animal by-products. The rising demand for animal by-products has led to increased attention towards animal care and welfare, which in turn is driving the consumption of soy protein ingredients in animal feed. Animals rely on a continuous supply of proteins for their healthy functioning, growth, reproduction, and metabolism. Hence, nutritional diets containing an adequate amount of protein fibers are essential in animal feed.

Soy protein concentrates are the most widely consumed soy protein ingredient in feed applications. They are used as milk replacers for livestock such as cattle and swine, and in aquafeed as a substitute to fishmeal. They are also used in pet food due to their advantages over soybean meal, in terms of taste and nutrition. Lower cost makes them a better alternative in feed applications compared to soy protein isolates.

Soy Protein Ingredients Market

Soy protein ingredients are used in various food applications such as bakery, confectionery, beverage, dairy replacers, or meat alternatives, in order to increase their nutritional value. Over the last two decades, soy protein was not widely consumed due to its flavourless profile; however, with technological advancements and innovations such as enzymatic systems, soy ingredients are produced with a neutral taste. These advancements have helped to enhance the functionality of soy protein ingredients, which has led to a successful replacement of meat protein with soy protein. Infant formulations for lactose intolerants comprise a large amount of soy protein isolates, as it contains no lactose, and forms the most important ingredient, which provides high-quality protein (approximately 70%) and a good PDCAAS (protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score) value. Such factors have helped in the acceptance of soy protein ingredients in the food & beverage industry. With supportive health claims from the JHCI (Joint Health Claim Initiative), soy proteins are being developed as an essential ingredient in functional foods and nutraceuticals.

Companies such as Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) offers products such as Clarisoy, which is utilized as an additive in sports and nutrition beverages, neutral beverages such as meal replacement and weight management products, fortified water, and Arcon—soy protein powder ingredient used in meat and poultry products. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), soy protein is considered to be a healthy food component, and its inclusion in a diet requiring low saturated fat and cholesterols may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

The global soy protein ingredients market witnessed steady growth over the last few years. The market size is projected to reach USD 12.84 Billion by 2022, at a CAGR of around 7.2% from 2017. Preference for meat and dairy alternatives, and the high nutritive value of soy has been a major driver that has contributed to the growth of the soy protein ingredients market.

The soy protein ingredients market, by type, is segmented into soy protein concentrates, soy protein isolates, soy flours, and others (textured soy protein, soy grits, and hydrolyzed soy proteins). Soy protein concentrates are the most widely used ingredient in the food and feed industry. It is cheaper than other types of soy protein ingredients, such as soy protein isolates, which has served as one of the major factors driving the soy protein ingredients market.

On the basis of application, the soy protein ingredients market is segmented into food and feed. The further segmentation of food includes meat alternatives, functional foods, dairy replacements, bakery & confectionery, infant foods, and others, and the further segmentation of feed include livestock feed, pet food, and aquafeed. The food segment, on the whole, accounted for a larger market share in 2016.

Soy protein ingredients have been of immense importance in the food processing industry. Their use in food applications such as meat processing, functional foods, and dairy replacements are driving the soy protein ingredients market to register a double-digit growth rate. In the food segment, the meat alternatives subsegment accounted for the largest share in 2016. Soy protein ingredients provide effective protein augmentation to meat products, which is one of the leading factors to drive the soy protein ingredients market in the food industry.

Soy Protein Ingredients Market

The soy protein ingredients market in North America was the largest in 2016, the Asia-Pacific market is however, projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. The high consumption of soy-based products in this region is one of the major factors leading to the growth of the market here.

Some anti-nutritional components of soy protein and the ban on soy products of GM origin are the major factors restraining the growth of the soy protein ingredients market. For instance, some anti-nutritional components in soy are broken down only during heat treatment and fermentation, but are retained during regular cooking. These components have been known to cause health issues such as allergic reactions.

Additionally, genetically modified crops are prohibited in developed regions such as Europe, where several countries as part of the European Union have banned their farmers from cultivating genetically modified crops. Scientists have cited health and environmental risks associated with genetically modified (GM) soybean. As a result, certain food manufacturers in the U.S., Canada, European countries, and Japan are demanding non-genetically modified soybean.

The soy protein ingredients market is characterized by medium to high competition due to the presence of a number of large- and small-scale firms with low product differentiation. New product launches, partnerships, and expansions are the key strategies adopted by these players to ensure their growth in the soy protein ingredients market. Players such as Archer Daniels Midland Company (U.S.), E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (U.S.), Cargill (U.S.), CHS Inc. (U.S.), Kerry Group plc (Ireland), Wilmar International Limited (Singapore), Nisshin OilliO Group, Ltd. (Japan), Ruchi Soya Industries Limited (India), Ag Processing Inc (U.S.), Devansoy (U.S.), The Scoular Company (U.S.), and Biopress S.A.S. (France) dominate this market.
