Renewable Natural Gas Market by Production Method (Landfills, Livestock, Wastewater Treatment) by Application (Electricity Generation, Transportation Fuel, Thermal Application) by Region (North America, Asia Pacific, Europe, South America, and Middle East & Africa) - Trends and Forecasts to 2030
Renewable natural gas (RNG) is a pipeline-quality gas that can be used in natural gas cars and is completely interchangeable with regular natural gas. RNG is essentially biogas, the gaseous byproduct of the breakdown of organic materials purified through processing. RNG can be utilized as a transportation fuel in the form of compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas, just like regular natural gas (LNG). The Renewable Fuel Standard recognizes RNG as an advanced biofuel. Natural gas used for pipelines originates from deep underground wells and is frequently related to petroleum extraction.
On the other hand, RNG is natural gas produced using organic waste products from daily living, including food scraps, lawn and garden trimmings, and animal and plant-based matter. Degradable carbon sources, including paper, cardboard, and wood, can also be used to create it. These resources are plentiful, making it possible to produce large amounts of RNG. According to a research by the University of California, RNG produced from our state's existing organic waste alone can supply more than 20% of California's current residential natural gas needs.
Based on the production method, the renewable natural gas market has been categorized into landfills, livestock, and wastewater treatment. Waste collected from residential, industrial, and commercial enterprises is disposed of in landfills. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), landfills are the third-largest source of methane emissions connected to people in the country. Since the chemical digestion takes place underground rather than in an anaerobic digester, renewable natural gas from landfills is also known as landfill gas. According to the EPA, as of September 2021, 548 LFG projects were in operation in the US. RNG can be synthesized using biogas recovery systems at livestock operations. In order to stabilize and maximize methane production, animal dung is collected and supplied to an anaerobic digester. The generated biogas can be converted into RNG and used to power generators or fuel cars that run on natural gas. The sediments collected during the wastewater treatment can be digested to create RNG. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates a potential for RNG of approximately one cubic foot of digester gas for every 100 gallons of wastewater.
Based on application, the renewable natural gas market is also classified into electricity generation, transportation fuel, and thermal application. RNG is either locally used, such as at on-site automobile fueling stations, or injected into a natural gas pipeline. RNG is a seamless alternative that may be employed for thermal applications, to generate power, as a feedstock for bioproducts, or as a car fuel because it can use existing infrastructure and is so chemically close to natural gas.
The global renewable natural gas market can be segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, South America, and Middle East & Africa. According to International Energy Agency (IEA), there is enormous potential for producing renewable and/or biomethane worldwide. There are huge prospects in North and South America, Europe, and Africa, as well as the Asia Pacific area, where natural gas imports and consumption have been expanding quickly in recent years. Based on the rising availability of the various feedstocks in a larger global economy, including the improvement in waste management and collection programs in many developing countries, the overall potential is expected to grow quickly over the next two decades.
The major players operating in the renewable natural gas market include Shell plc (UK), VERBIO Vereinigte Bioenergie AG (Germany), Kinder Morgan (US), Montauk (US), Archaea Energy Inc (US), Clean Energy Fuels (US), Gasrec (UK), Chevron Corporation (US), BP plc (UK), J V ENERGEN LLP (UK), REN Energy (South Africa) and Waga Energy (France).
