Urolithiasis Management Devices Market - Global Forecasts to 2022
Urolithiasis refers to the development of stones in the kidney, bladder, and urinary tract. Stone formation has been one of the most common lifestyle disorders in the past few years. According to the European Association of Urology, in countries with high standard of living such as Sweden, Canada or the US, the renal stone prevalence is more than 10% of the population. Moreover, in some countries an increase of more than 37% over the last 20 years was observed. This rising prevalence of urinary stones coupled with the increasing preference for non-invasive surgeries is likely to serve as the major factor contributing to an increased demand for urolithiasis management procedures across the globe.
The management of urolithiasis depends on the specific patient case which is based on factors such as the presenting symptoms and the size and location of the stones. Over the last few decades, there have been many advancements in minimally invasive techniques to treat urolithiasis. Currently, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), and laparoscopic ureterolithotomy are the treatments used for urolithiasis.
The major factors driving the urolithiasis management devices market are rising geriatric population, rising awareness of the minimally invasive surgeries, advancements in technology of the devices due to various external factors such as entry of new market players, increasing investment, and government initiatives.
