The growing number of residential and commercial establishments has increased the chances of explosions and fire-related accidents. Due to this, several countries across North America and Europe have mandated strict fire safety regulations and protocols. This has led to the increased use of flame retardants in buildings to meet these government regulations. Bodies such as National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and International Code Council have framed regulations for fire safety due to the growing consumer demand for homes, electronics, and automobiles. The EU’s green deal and the subsequent chemical strategy for sustainability were introduced in October 2020 to support halogen-free fla me retardants (HFFRs) and smoke suppressants. A few codes given by NFPA, which can be related to flame retardants, are listed in the table below.

Restraints: High loading levels of mineral-based flame retardants altering the properties of final products

One of the biggest drawbacks of flame retardants is the high loading levels associated with mineral-based flame retardants. Mineral fillers such as aluminum, magnesium hydroxide, and magnesium carbonate are endothermically decomposable and environmentally benign flame retardants. Retardants used as fillers are loaded in large quantities in the polymer matrix to ensure flame retardation. These minerals are usually inexpensive but require higher loadings of up to 65% when used in flame retardants. However, this excessive loading of mineral fillers increases the density and reduces the mechanical properties (thermal stability) of the final product. This reduced property of flame retardants can be a restraint for the market growth of flame retardants.

Opportunities: Development of more effective synergist compounds

To boost the performance of flame retardants, compounds such as bromine, nitrogen, phosphorus, and zinc are added to the polymer blends in higher amounts. When mineral fillers with high loadings are added to flame retardants, they tend to decrease the properties of flame retardants. To overcome this, synergist compounds with polymer blends are introduced, which help in boosting the performance of flame retardants. With the combination of such blends in a polymer matrix, the effect is found to be more efficient than compounds acting separately. Synergist blends reduce the amount of halogenated flame retardants by percent weight, reduce toxicity, and improve the retardant properties.

Producers of phosphorus and PN (phosphorus nitrogen) flame retardant additives have suffered from the Chinese government’s decision in 2020 to curtail power to several provinces. This has caused ripples through numerous supply chains, one of them being the energy-intensive production of white or yellow phosphorus (P4), It was estimated that around one-third of the capacity had been taken out, leading to prices more than tripling at one point in late summer/early autumn of 2021. According to the CEO of FRX Polymers, over 90% of halogen-free flame retardants (HFFRs) are based on P4.
