The exterior insulation and finish system (EIFS) market was valued at USD 54.86 billion in 2017 and is projected to reach USD 108.11 billion by 2023. The market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 12.24% during the forecast period. The base year considered for the study is 2017, and the market size is projected from 2018 to 2023.

The EIFS report aims to study the various segments that are part of the manufacturing process of EIFS and the end consumers. Thus, based on this, the study aims to study the EIFS market on the basis of product type, insulation material, component, and end-use industry. The other objectives include providing detailed information regarding the main factors influencing the growth of the market (drivers, restraints, opportunities, and industry-specific challenges). It also aims to study the individual growth trends, future prospects, and contribution of various segments to the total market. The study also analyzes the opportunities in the market for stakeholders and provides details of the competitive landscape for the market leaders. The study strategically profiles key players and comprehensively analyzes their core competencies. Finally, the study tracks and analyzes competitive developments such as partnerships, agreements, joint ventures, mergers & acquisitions, expansions, new product developments, and research & development activities in the EIFS market.

The research methodology used to estimate and forecast the EIFS market includes the top-down and bottom-up approaches. The total market size of EIFS was calculated based on the percentage split of EIFS as well as on the percentage split of different end-use industries. The allotment and calculation were done on the basis of extensive primary interviews and secondary research. Primary research involved in this report includes extensive interviews with key people such as CEOs, VPs, directors, and executives. After arriving at the overall market size, the total market was split into several segments and subsegments. Data triangulation and market breakdown procedures were employed to complete the overall market engineering process and arrive at the exact statistics for all segments and subsegments. The breakdown of profiles of primaries is depicted in the following figure:

Drivers

Stringent regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emission

In March 2007, the European Heads of State agreed to a binding and unilateral GHG emission reduction of 20% by 2020. This agreement becomes a legal requirement in the European Union with plans to reduce GHG emission by 20% by 2020 and by 40% by 2030. Similarly, in 2009, the US announced to reduce GHG emissions by 17% by 2020 in comparison to that in 2005. Therefore, the ongoing trend of reducing GHGs, which is followed by most countries, is fueling the demand for building thermal insulation, such as EIFS.

Reduction in energy consumption and its related cost

In developed and developing countries, the growing middle-class consumers demand improved home heating and cooling services. This demand increases the energy consumption, and, in turn, its related cost. The US Department of Energy (DOE) studies state that 40% of the energy consumed is lost due to air infiltration. This air infiltrates the home in the form of drafts through walls sockets, floors, roofs, windows, and doorways. This is true not only in new houses but also in old houses and buildings that have a huge renovation area. The use of insulation materials reduces HVAC operating costs by 50%–70% in buildings. Monthly utility bills can be reduced by increasing the level of insulation in an under-insulated home. It is also mostly perceived that energy saved by insulation is less than fabrication energy (energy utilized in using these products) of the material.

Restraints

Availability of green insulation material

In the EIFS market, the conventional materials used include stone wool, glass wool, and plastic foam, among others. However, the availability of green insulation material known as hempcrete acts as a restraint for the growth of the market. Hempcrete is a mixture of hemp fibers and cement-like binders that can be used for building thermal insulation. It is a crop that can be cultivated in both temperate and tropical climates and absorbs CO2 during its growth process, making it environmentally friendly. Hempcrete has increasingly become popular in Europe among building professionals and engineers. It provides resistance to heat and manages moisture in buildings. Thus, its availability acts as a restraint for the conventional building thermal insulation market.

MarketsandMarkets projects that the exterior insulation and finish system (EIFS) market size will grow from USD 60.68 billion in 2018 to USD 108.11 billion by 2023, at a projected CAGR of 12.24%. The EIFS market is expected to witness high growth as a result of the growing demand for thermal insulation in residential and non-residential construction and owing to the stringent regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The segmentation for this report is based on product type, insulation material, component, end-use industry, and region. On the basis of product type, the market is segmented into PB (polymer-based) and PM (polymer-modified), wherein the PB segment is projected to be a faster-growing product type in the EIFS market. PB provides high thermal insulation and is cost effective. It typically consists of closed expanded polystyrene (EPS) and can be either adhesively or mechanically attached to the sheathing. PB EIFS can incorporate additional layers of base coat & reinforcing mesh to achieve higher impact resistance.

EIFS has witnessed extensive traction for the non-residential construction industry. It is used in both residential and non-residential construction, and its utility includes providing thermal insulation and water resistance. The non-residential segment is projected to have a larger share and dominate the EIFS market from 2018 to 2023. The residential construction industry is the next application to play a key role in changing the EIFS landscape and grow at the second-highest rate during the forecast period. The non-residential construction industry, for a long time, has been the major contributor to the rising demand for EIFS.

Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) Market

Europe is projected to have the largest market share and dominate the EIFS market. This region offers potential growth opportunities, as countries such as Italy and Poland are projected to be emerging markets for thermal insulation products such as EIFS. The growth of the EIFS market in this region is propelled by factors such as the growth of both residential and non-residential construction and increasing demand for thermal insulation. Also, the growing population and economic development are other factors driving the EIFS market. However, the availability of green insulation materials is restraining the growth of the market.

The global market for EIFS is dominated by players such as BASF (Germany), Saint-Gobain (France), Wacker Chemie AG (Germany), Sto SE & Co KGaA (Germany), Owen Corning (US), Dryvit Systems Inc. (US), Master Wall, Inc. (US), Parex USA, Inc. (US), and Rmax (US). Other companies include Durabond Products Limited (Canada), Durock Alfacinf international (Canada), Adex Systems (Canada), Omega Products International (US), and Terraco Group (UK). These players adopted various strategies such as expansions & investments, agreements, contracts, partnership, mergers & acquisitions, and new product & technology launches to cater to the needs of the end users.

Opportunities

Policies & regulations

In recent years, the EU, the US, and Asia Pacific countries, especially China, have been very active in implementing policies that are influencing the overall energy consumption and reduction of GHG emissions. These policies and initiatives have been implemented for addressing climate change, improving energy efficiency, and reducing dependency on foreign energy sources. All these initiatives have helped drive the global and regional building thermal insulation markets. The state and local policies have also played an important role in the growth of the EIFS market, especially in the US and the EU where federal and regional policies on energy efficiency serve as guidelines for setting minimum standards. From a policy perspective, the European Union's 27 member nations (EU-27), the US, and China constitute the largest opportunity for improving building efficiency, globally. They are the most dynamic regions in promoting energy-efficient building insulation technologies. These countries have established stringent building codes and standards for energy performance. They provide tax credits, low-interest loans, and rebate programs for the installation of energy-efficient technologies and are improving the availability and accessibility of information on new energy-efficient technologies.

Challenges

Lack of awareness

There is a lack of awareness among consumers as well as building professionals about building thermal insulation (EIFS). The biggest gap between today’s regulations and recommended energy performance are found in Southern Europe. There needs to be a major initiative in this region to raise awareness and bring building regulations in line with the findings of Ecofys VII (Ecofys is an innovative and creative company which creates smart, effective, and practically sustainable solutions across renewable energy, energy, and carbon efficiency).
