High military spending drives the UK's focus on modernizing defense with advanced technologies in the Integrated Visual Augmentation Systems market.
The UK, a member of NATO, is investing in Integrated Visual Augmentation Systems (IVAS) to improve its military power. The UK spent the most on defense in Central and Western Europe. Part of this money has gone to support Ukraine and Iraq operations and modernize the military. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) wants to use IVAS to make troops more aware and improve their performance. Thermoteknix Systems, a UK-based company, introduced the Fused Night Vision Goggle with Augmented Reality (FNVG-AR) at the DSEI 2023 exhibition in London. This lightweight device integrates advanced night vision, thermal imaging, and augmented reality to enhance visibility and awareness in low-light environments.
In July 2024, the British Army used augmented reality (AR) to improve command and control during exercises. The 1st (UK) Division is testing its readiness for a NATO role in Exercise Land Warrior, working remotely from locations like Latvia and Andover. AR adds digital features to the real world, while VR creates fully digital environments. Soldiers used AR goggles and controllers to interact with real scenarios. The AR system is still being tested for security. It improves flexibility and helps the Army's "How We Fight 2026" plan, which focuses on stealthy, decentralized operations.
Varjo (Finland) partnered with BAE Systems (UK) for Project OdySSEy in September 2023. The project seeks to develop a single synthetic environment for military training. It uses VR and simulation technologies to let different military forces train together. The training covers air, land, sea, space, and cyber domains. It offers realistic battlefield experiences without needing live training.
Along with upgrading equipment, the UK is also working on new training solutions to prepare its armed forces for challenging situations. The British Army is working with Bohemia Interactive Simulations (BISim), a software company that makes military training products. They want to add virtual reality (VR), machine learning (ML), and cloud computing into their training programs. BISim is also doing pilot projects with the Collective Training Transformation Programme to test mixed reality technologies. The aim is to have the training more practical and realistic so troops can respond better to modern combat challenges. These developments in IVAS and training show that the UK is focused on keeping its military strong and well-equipped with the latest technology.
