The automotive gearbox market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.24% during the forecast period, to reach USD 138.52 Billion by 2025. The factors such as consumer preference for enhanced driving experience and smooth gear shifting are driving the growth of the automotive gearbox market.
Expansion is the key strategy adopted by major players to gain traction in this mature market. For instance, Aisin Seiki’s subsidiaries Aisin AI Co., Ltd., and Advics Co., Ltd. expanded their production in Brazil. In April 2014, Aisin AI and Advics established their own manufacturing subsidiaries at the site of Aisin Seikis production base in Itu, Sao Paulo. Aisin AI commenced the production of manual transmissions. Also, In November 2017, the company announced that it will increase its production capacity for automatic transmissions by about 30% from the present level to 12.5 million units by 2020. It will increase its automatic transmission (AT) assembly capacity and production capacity for torque converters and other AT-related parts at the plants of its group companies like Aisin AW Co., Ltd. in and outside Japan.
The automotive gearbox market is dominated by a few global players. The key market players include ZF Friedrichshafen (Germany), Aisin Seiki (Japan), BorgWarner (US), and Magneti Marelli (Italy), Eaton (Ireland).
ZF Friedrichshafen is one of the leading players in the automotive gearbox market. The company held a groundbreaking ceremony for its high-end automatic transmission project in Jiaxing, Zhejiang. The total investment in the project is Chinese yuan (CNY) 5 billion. The new facilities to be built on a site of 253,000 square meters will produce high-end intelligent transmissions for light-duty and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Production of light-duty vehicle transmissions is planned to be launched on January 1, 2019, with an annual production capacity of 160,000 transmissions.

Eaton is another leading player in the automotive gearbox market in Europe. In April 2017, Eaton and Cummins announced an agreement to form a joint venture for automated transmissions for heavy-duty and medium-duty commercial vehicles. Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies has introduced a new fuel economy-focused 18-speed Eaton UltraShift PLUS MXP automated transmission. It will be paired with a Cummins ISX15 diesel engine to deliver a powertrain designed for sustained performance and maximum fuel efficiency in Mexico’s unique driving conditions.
In 2017, Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies introduced the new Endurant 12-speed automated transmission at the North American Commercial Vehicle Show in Atlanta, Georgia. The light and efficient 1,850 lb-ft. product is capable of heavy-duty transmission and weighs up to 105 pounds less than competitive automated manual transmissions. These new product developments would help the company to cater to the increased demand of automated transmission in market for automotive gearboxes.
