The last decade has experienced the emergence of a large number of small and medium sized players in the sensors market in consumer electronics. Most of these players focus on selected product segments such as Image sensor or motion sensor only. For instance, Sony Corp. (Japan) and Aptina Imaging (U.S.) manufacture and supply Image sensors only. Similarly, Cypress Semiconductors (U.S.) and Synaptics (U.S.) hold expertise in touch sensing technology. Likewise, there are a few companies such as Bosch Sensortec (Germany), STMicroelectronics (U.S.) whose product portfolios for sensors extend across major applications in consumer electronics. Each of these sensors manufacturers are market leaders in the product fields they manufacture.

Aptina recently its new Clarity+™ 13-Megapixel (MP) sensor for smartphone applicationswhich enables mobile phone designers to boost the resolution of their cameras from 8MP to 13MP without any compromise.
