The global BESS energy capacity available was ~375 GWh in 2024 and is expected to reach ~6500 GWh by 2035. In 2024, the BESS supply capacity for EV applications accounted for 3-4% of the total worldwide BESS capacity. However, this is expected to reach ~30-35% by 2035, owing to increasing EV power consumption, aging or limited grid infrastructure that cannot handle high power demands, decarbonization and integration with renewables, and other factors. BESS helps mitigate high power demand from fast-charging stations (e.g., DC fast chargers, 150–350 kW), reducing strain on the grid through peak shaving and load shifting. It also stores excess energy from renewable sources (e.g., solar PV) for use during periods of high demand or low generation, enhancing sustainability.
