Thermosetting adhesives do require a curing period. When the thermoset adhesive is first applied to a substrate, they have short polymer molecules. During the curing process, the thermoset adhesives undergo a chemical cross-linking reaction, which is irreversible, and thus bonds together long chains of polymer molecules. Due to this reaction, the physical properties and chemistries of thermoplastic adhesive changes, and thus allowing the adhesive bond to set.

• Thermoplastic adhesives

Thermoplastic adhesives don’t require a curing period as thermoset adhesives require. Once the adhesive is applied, it either cools (in case of hot melt adhesives) or dries (in case of glue) to form an adhesive bond between two substrates.
