Tappet Market

Market Leader - Tappet Market

The global tappet market for automotive is projected to grow at a CAGR of 3.36% during the forecast period, to reach USD 10.11 Billion by 2025. The market growth is primarily driven by an increase in passenger vehicles production. Also, the growth of the commercial vehicle segment, which can be attributed to the improving business environment for fleet operators and a rise in demand from the construction and mining sectors, directly impacts the growth of the automotive tappet market. The growing trend of engine downsizing and stringent emission norms are further driving the market for roller tappets.

New product launch is the key strategy adopted by major players to gain traction in the market. For instance, NSK (Japan) developed a low-torque tappet roller for the rocker arm of automobile diesel engines. This new product uses chrome plating on the shaft of the tappet roller to improve the durability of needle roller versions. As a result, it is now possible to replace double roller versions that have a sliding bearing with a needle roller version that has a roller bearing featuring low friction loss. NSK is targeting global sales of 1.5 Billion yen in 2019 for this new product, which will help improve the fuel efficiency of automobiles.

The tappet market for automotive is dominated by a few global players. The key market players are Schaeffler (Germany) and Eaton (Ireland). Schaeffler is one of the leading players in the tappet market for automotive. The company has developed hydraulic switchable valve tappets which allow individual cylinders to be deactivated.

According to the company, the first three-cylinder engine using such a system from Schaeffler will go into production in 2018. In addition, the company has set up a new manufacturing hall for 1,000 employees and central warehouse on a total area of approx. 46,000 square meters in Nanjing, China. This facility will manufacture camshaft phasing units, hydraulic tappets, chains, tensioners, and other engine components. Also, the company has expanded the Centre of Competence for Surface Technology at Herzogenaurach, Germany. It has developed a new type of coating system, Triondur CX+, which makes it possible to reduce by half the friction losses in car valve trains over the entire lifetime. This coating system was also used on the tappets to reduce the wear and tear of the surface.

Eaton (Ireland) has a strong presence in Europe, Asia Oceania, and North America. The company acquired Mexican automotive lifter manufacturer Morestana S.A. de C.V. (Mexico) for USD 8.0 million. Morestana, which was owned by DESC, S.A. de C.V., produces hydraulic lifters for automotive engine manufacturers and the automotive aftermarket. Also, the company has a diverse product portfolio for OE clients, which makes the company a formidable competitor in the global market.
