Distribution automation systems consist of three sub-segments for automation, namely substation automation, feeder automation, and customer automation. Feeder automation systems in distribution network include various components such as automatic recloser sets, protection relays, fault circuit detectors, voltage regulators, capacitor banks, tie/load break switches, Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), and automatic sectionalizers. Each of these devices work in-line to reduce manual intervention in case of any power disturbance, and help the operator sitting in a remote area to detect fault in the distribution network, locate, and restore the settings via a communication system with the help of Programmable Logic Codes (PLCs) and software.
Currently, the Americas is estimated to be the largest market for feeder automation, given the high automation practices in electricity distribution. Within the region, the U.S. accounted for a majority share in the total feeder automation market in 2013, and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7.2% from 2014 to 2019. Large-scale implementation of automation in energy distribution for huge industries and commercial sectors in the country was the reason behind the boom in the power industry.
Asia-Pacific is another major market for feeder automation service providers. Within the region, China and Japan have already implemented feeder automation systems, achieving less power disturbances with the help of feeder systems. On the other hand, countries such as the U.K., Canada, Mexico, and Germany are expected to rapidly increase the installation of automated feeder systems, in order to improve the reliability and efficiency of distribution networks.
