The fly ash market has grown at a moderate pace over the past five years owing to the increase in the demand for fly ash from Portland cement & concrete and bricks & blocks applications. Currently, the fly ash market is dominated by various key players, such as Boral Limited (Australia), Headwaters Inc. (U.S.), CEMEX S.A.B. de C.V. (Mexico), Lafarge North America Inc. (U.S.), Charah Inc. (U.S.), Separation Technologies LLC (U.S.), Aggregate Industries (U.K.), FlyAshDirect (U.S.), Salt River Materials Group (U.S.), and Ashtech (India) Pvt. Ltd. (India).

The strategy of agreements was undertaken by Charah Inc. and Headwaters Incorporated in the past few years. Mergers & acquisitions was another important development strategy adopted by the companies to improve their presence in the fly ash market.

In October 2016, Charah Inc. entered into an agreement with Dynegy Inc. to manage coal combustion products (CCPs) produced by two Dynegy Inc. facilities in Ohio, U.S. Charah would sell and market Class F fly ash to concrete and ready-mix concrete manufacturers. In November, 2014 Charah Inc. entered into agreements with Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company (LG&E and KU) to manage their coal combustion products (CCPs).

Headwaters Inc. is a leader in manufacturing of building products for institutional construction industries, residential remodeling, and residential construction. Headwaters is the largest marketer and manager of coal combustion products in the U.S. construction material industry. The company operates in three segments, namely, energy technologies, constructional materials, and building materials. The company’s construction materials segment mainly focuses on recycling high quality fly ash. In February 2016, Headwaters Incorporated entered into an agreement with CalStar Products, Inc. (U.S.) for the acquisition of the technology used to make cement using Class-C fly ash.

Boral Limited is a global distributor and manufacturer of building and construction materials. The company operates through four divisions, namely, Boral Construction Materials & Cement, Boral Building Products, Boral USA, and Boral Gypsum. In November 2016, Boral Limited acquired Headwaters Incorporated to improve its presence in the U.S. market. This will improve the company’s position in the fly ash market as Headwaters Incorporated is the biggest fly ash company in the U.S. In February 2014, Aggregates Industries acquired the remaining 15% of shares in Ash Solutions. This improved the company’s capability to provide sustainable construction solutions to its customers in the U.K.
