3. Siemens Maintains Its Dominance in Home Automation & Controls Market – Market Leader

The last decade has experienced the emergence of a large number of small and medium sized players in the global home automation & controls market. Most of these players focus on selected few product segments such as lighting control or security control only. For instance, Lutron (U.S.) and Acuity Brands (U.S.) deal with only lighting control products, that too, mainly, in the U.S. Similarly, Tyco (U.S.) holds expertise in security and access control product segments only. On the other hand, companies such as ABB (Switzerland), Legrand (France), and Zumtobel (Austria) have considerable presence in the European lighting control market. Likewise, there are a few companies such as Honeywell (U.S.), Schneider Electric (France), and Siemens (Germany), whose product portfolios extend across all the segments of home automation & control. Out of these, Siemens, currently, dominates the global market of home automation & controls by offering products in all the segments such as lighting control, security control, access control, and HVAC control— across all the major geographies.

Several factors are responsible for bringing Siemens where it is today, in home automation & controls market; major ones among these being strong R&D and profitable acquisitions. The company currently holds a 19.5% stake in OSRAM (Germany), which is one of the largest lighting companies in the world and offers lighting control products through subsidiaries such as Encelium (U.S.). Thus, it is able to serve all types of customers, small as well as big. Although it derives almost half of its revenue from Europe, Siemens has a strong presence in Americas and APAC region as well. With such a large number of patents to its name and a huge manpower at disposal, the company is always looking for ways to increase its market dominance through innovative solutions or expansion in untapped geographical regions. For example, Siemens recently launched Desigo V5.1 in August 2013, which is the first and the only building automation system, currently, to use the BACnet/IPv6 standard. For its unprecedented contribution towards the home automation industry, Siemens was recently presented the 2013 European Market Leadership Award in building automation systems.
