Nickel Market

Tsingshan Holding Group (China) and Huayou Cobalt Co., Ltd. (China) are Leading Players in the Nickel Market

The nickel market is estimated to reach USD 80.68 billion by 2031 from USD 57.59 billion in 2026, registering a CAGR of 7.0% during the forecast period.

The nickel market includes the mining, extraction, processing, refining, and supply of nickel and nickel-containing products used in stainless steel, alloys, and battery applications. Nickel is a key raw material for stainless steel production and is also used in nickel-containing lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems. The most commercially significant nickel products include nickel pig iron (NPI), ferronickel, nickel matte, mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP), nickel metal, and nickel sulphate, with demand varying according to end-use requirements and processing routes. Nickel is primarily produced from laterite ores and sulphide deposits, with Indonesia playing a major role in global mine production and downstream processing. Processing routes include smelting, high-pressure acid leach (HPAL), and refining into higher-purity nickel products. Battery-grade nickel compounds require stringent purity specifications, while nickel used in stainless steel and alloys serves a broad range of industrial applications. Growing demand for stainless steel, electric vehicles, and battery materials, alongside investments in mining, refining, and integrated processing facilities, continues to shape market development. However, oversupply, price volatility, high capital requirements, energy consumption, environmental impacts, and geopolitical and supply-chain risks continue to influence the global nickel market.

The major players operating in the nickel market with a significant global presence are Tsingshan Holding Group (China), Jinchuan Group Co., Ltd. (China), Norilsk Nickel (Russia), Vale Base Metals (Canada), Huayou Cobalt Co., Ltd. (China), GEM Co., Ltd. (China), Nickel Industries Limited (Australia), Lygend Resources & Technology Co., Ltd. (China), Glencore (Switzerland), and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (Japan). These companies have adopted strategies such as expansions, acquisitions, partnerships, and product launches to strengthen their market position.

In April 2026, Nickel Industries completed the acquisition of an additional 2% interest in the Excelsior Nickel Cobalt (ENC) HPAL project in Indonesia.

Tsingshan Holding Group (China)

Tsingshan builds integrated overseas industrial parks with captive ports and power, running from laterite ore through NPI and matte to stainless steel and a new-energy chain of nickel-cobalt hydrometallurgy, precursors, cathode materials, and cells. Tsingshan's 2023 output of 1.12 Mt of nickel units (+27%) and 16.28 Mt of stainless steel makes it the world's largest nickel and stainless steel producer. Its Indonesian parks host the RKEF lines that make most of the world's NPI, the matte converters it pioneered in 2021, and HPAL plants run by partners. In mid-2025, the Group said it was considering NPI cuts in Indonesia as smelter margins thinned, and it projected Indonesian NPI output of 1.74 Mt for 2025. The July 2025 acquisition of 82.5% of POSCO Zhangjiagang Stainless strengthened its position in Chinese stainless steel.

Huayou Cobalt Co., Ltd. (China)

Huayou builds an integrated 'nickel resources - nickel smelting - ternary materials' chain to raise MHP self-sufficiency and reduce exposure to raw material price swings under a framework of overseas resources, global manufacturing, and international markets. Huayou's nickel shipments rose 58.7% to 292.5 kt in 2025 as the 120 kt Huafei HPAL ran above design and the Huake matte plant ran at full output. Revenue rose 32.9% to CNY 81.0 billion and net profit 47.1% to CNY 6.11 billion. Next is the Pomalaa HPAL with PT Vale Indonesia and Ford, up to 120 kt a year of nickel in MHP, in trial operation from September 2026, and the Sorowako HPAL, adding to Huafei, which the company describes as the world's largest HPAL plant.

MARKET RANKING

The global nickel market includes large-scale integrated producers, Indonesian nickel mining and processing companies, and established suppliers serving the stainless steel and battery materials industries. Leading players include Tsingshan (China), Huayou (China), Harita Nickel (Indonesia), Nornickel (Russia), Jinchuan (China), Vale Base Metals (Canada), and Nickel Industries (Australia). These companies maintain strong competitive positions through large production capacities, integrated operations, access to nickel resources, and investments in downstream processing. Other significant participants, including MBMA, GEM, PT Vale Indonesia, Glencore, Sumitomo Metal Mining, Anglo American, South32, and Eramet, contribute to the competitive landscape through mining, refining, and battery material production. Market participants are focusing on capacity expansion, processing efficiency, high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) technology, and strategic partnerships to strengthen their market positions and respond to demand from stainless steel, electric vehicle batteries, and energy storage applications.
