To increase the capacity requirements for data services and to enable effective and continuous communication has been a challenge for most of the mobile operators. The demand for small cell technology solutions is expected to grow enormously in the coming years, as the global operators are in dire need to address the capacity and coverage challenges. The rapid uptake for small cells will result in increased demand for backhaul solutions. The backhaul solution providers are optimistic about these trends as they design and develop agile solutions with robust capabilities to extend support for large deployments and offer an end-to-end solution to mobile operators.

As mobile operators consider deployment of small cells to complement the existing macrocells network infrastructure to enhance the coverage and capacity, they are strategically analyzing the small cell backhaul solutions. These solutions are used at hot-spots as well as not-spots to build a robust communication network and are rated to be responsive and scalable to suit the small cell location requirements. Extremely dense deployment of small cells is also being managed cost effectively by Self Organizing Networks (SON). This technology removes the optimization bottlenecks, manages numerous small cell base stations, enables quick deployment, and cost effectively improves network efficiencies. Backhaul solution vendors are investing in research and development to offer innovative products and are also partnering with the small cell vendors to offer highly customized and complete backhaul solution.

The backhaul solutions have existed since long and the deployment of small cells to complement the established congested macro cell layer has paved way for the evolution of backhaul solutions. The technology is very well-positioned to empower operators to utilize the available spectrum and tap the new revenue opportunities created with addition of subscribers and demand for data services. The small cell backhaul solutions are becoming relevant as they improve indoor/outdoor coverage, capacity, and efficiently deliver voice and data services cost-effectively.

Backhaul connects the small sub-networks to the core network and is considered to be the backbone of communication infrastructure. It helps in freeing spectrum frequency for carrying traffic load and thus, improves network capacity and coverage. Traditionally, wired technology was used for backhauling that is, to connect cell towers and other long range high power nodes. But, the capital expenditure required for wired transmission medium is higher as compared to the wireless. Different technology alternatives for small cell backhaul are available and the solution vendors are acquiring expertise, and partnering with the ecosystem players to build good-for-all-requirements solutions.
