Source Measure Unit Market

Keysight (US) and Fortive (US) are the Key Players in the Source Measure Unit Market

The source measure unit market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.10% between 2018 and 2023 to reach USD 1,102.1 Million by 2023. In 2017, Keysight (US) and Fortive (US) dominated the source measure unit market.

Product launches and acquisitions were the major strategies adopted by the players to increase their share in the source measure unit market in 2017. Companies have adopted the strategy of acquisition to expand their geographic reach and enhance their product portfolio. For example, in February 2018, Viavi acquired the test and measurement business of Cobham plc for USD 455 Million in cash. The acquisition is likely to strengthen Viavi’s competitive position in the emerging 5G wireless deployment. Moreover, National Instruments introduced the PXIe-4163 high-density source measure unit in January 2018. It provides 6 times more DC channel density than previous NI PXI SMUs for testing RF, MEMS, and mixed-signal, and other analog semiconductor components.

In August 2016, Tektronix launched the Keithley 4200A-SCS parameter analyzer, a modular and fully integrated parameter analyzer that performs electrical characterization of materials, semiconductor devices, and processes. It consists of source measure units (SMUs) for current–voltage characterization.

Keysight Technologies is one of the key leaders in the source measure unit market. Evolving technology standards and the need for faster data rates are driving the company to invest in R&D. Keysight is investing in product developments to address the changing needs of the market and dynamic nature of the semiconductor industry. The company showcases a wide-ranging sales strategy used by its direct sales force, distributors, resellers, and representatives. Its sales strategy differs according to the number of customers, complexity of products, and geographical coverage. In May 2016, Keysight Technologies launched a PXI Express source/measurement unit, M9111A, built for design validation and production test of next-generation power amplifiers and front-end modules supporting cellular and wireless connectivity formats.

In July 2016, Danaher completed the spin-off of Tektronix when Fortive became the new owner of Tektronix. By adding Tektronix in the Fortive business line, the T&M business offering has been strengthened. Tektronix manufactures and designs the test, measurement, and monitoring solutions. It offers its SMU product line under the name Keithley. The company’s competitive advantage is its ability to employ advanced technologies in its products and solutions to fulfill a variety of requirements of its customers, many of which demand improving challenging operating environments. Fortive own numerous patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and other intellectual properties and licenses, which are important for the growth of its business. In April 2016, Tektronix launched an iPhone application “Keithley IVy app” which works with 2600B source measure unit (SMU) instruments.
