ABB, Ltd and Siemens AG are the leading players in the Utility Communication Market

The global utility communication market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 15.55%, from 2016 to 2021. Asia-Pacific is estimated to be the largest market for utility communication, followed by North America in 2016. This trend is expected to continue till 2021. The growth of the utility communication market is driven by the increasing use of smart grids and mobile devices, modification in billing practices in power utility companies, and stringent regulatory requirements for power utilities. In addition, several government initiatives focusing on building smart cities, data centers, and cyber cites are expected to boost the market for utility communication technologies.

The utility communication market is dominated by a few global players. The key players operating in this market include ABB, Ltd. (Switzerland), Siemens AG (Germany), Schneider Electric (France), General Electric (U.S.), and Ericsson (Sweden).

The major strategies adopted by the players include contracts & agreements, new product launches, expansions, and mergers & acquisitions. Contracts & agreements was the most commonly adopted strategy from 2014 to February 2017. Industry players also adopted new product developments, which was the second most widely followed strategy, during the same period.

ABB, Ltd. is a leading player that offers utility communication technologies and solutions under its network management subsegment, which comes under the power systems segment. The company’s offerings include control and protection systems for power generation, T&D, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, and software solutions for central electricity market and utilities. The network management portfolio also consists of wireless and fixed communication systems for utilities, including fiber optics, microwave radio and power line applications, teleprotection, and substation communication networks. In January 2017, the company signed a contract with Central Hudson Gas & Electric (U.S.) to supply a wireless communication network which will ultimately provide a foundation for gathering multiple utility applications through an integrated distribution automation program. This is yet another example of ABB’s next-level strategy, focusing on smarter and greener grids through increased automation and digitalization.

Siemens AG is a technology company with core activities in the fields of electrification, automation, and digitalization. Its operations span the entire value chain, from power generation, transmission, and distribution to smart grid solutions. The utility communication solutions is part of the energy management segment, which offers various products, systems, solutions, software, and services for transmitting and distributing power and for developing intelligent grid infrastructure. The division’s customers include power providers, network operators, industrial companies, infrastructure developers, and construction companies. In February 2017, the company entered into a joint venture with Allgauer Uberlandwerk GmbH (Germany). This joint venture would offer consulting services for distribution grid operators. The services included in this contract will focus on ‘intelligent instead of copper’ solutions for smart grid expansion.
