The vehicle control unit market is dominated by globally established players such as Robert Bosch GmbH (Germany), Continental AG (Germany), Texas Instruments (US), Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (Japan), and STMicroelectronics (Switzerland). These companies developed new products, adopted expansion strategies, and undertook collaborations, partnerships, and mergers & acquisitions to gain traction in this high-growth vehicle control unit market.

European region is dominating the current global automotive industry and hence is home to most of the global leaders in the vehicle control unit market as well, such as Robert Bosch GmbH (Germany), Continental AG (Germany), STMicroelectronics (Switzerland), IET SPA (Perugia), Rimac Automobili (Croatia), and AIM Technologies (England).

Robert Bosch GmbH is one of the leading players in this market. The company is continuously developing new advanced vehicle control unit solutions with innovative technologies. Also, Bosch is investing heavily in the R&D of the vehicle control unit. In January 2018, Bosch formed its new Powertrain Solutions division to develop comprehensive and flexible solutions in powertrain technology, regardless of the energy source. The new division resulted from the merger of the former Gasoline Systems and Diesel Systems divisions. It offers comprehensive products and solutions for powertrain technology, from gasoline and diesel direct injection to electrified powertrains with battery systems and, in the future, it will provide fuel-cell technologies as well.

Continental AG is another leading player, followed by Texas Instruments, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, and STMicroelectronics. In June 2019, Texas Instruments introduced an automotive system based chip that was the industry’s first to integrate a controller and transceiver for Controller Area Network with Flexible Data Rate (CAN FD). Designed to meet the high-bandwidth and data-rate flexibility needs of in-vehicle networks, the TCAN4550-Q1 uses the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) bus of almost any microcontroller to implement, with minimal hardware changes, a CAN FD interface or increase the amount of CAN FD bus ports in a system. In February 2019, Mitsubishi announced that it has developed what is believed to be the world's smallest power unit for a two-motor hybrid electric vehicle (two inverters and one converter), measuring just 2.7 liters in volume, offering a world-leading 150 kVA/l power density. The motor also boasts top-class output-power density of 23 kW/l.

Another important player in the industry is STMicroelectronics. In February 2018, STMicroelectronics developed chips that can tackle features like night vision, micro-mapping, and 360-degree detection, in a bid to meet demand from car manufacturers racing to build driverless autos. Also, in October 2017, it introduced the new Telemaco3Ptelematics and connectivity processors (STA1385 and its variants)—the first automotive microprocessors to integrate a powerful, dedicated, isolated Hardware Security Module (HSM), which acts as an independent security guard to watch data exchanges and encrypt and authenticate messages.
