Veolia is a global provider of environmental management services. It is engaged in the management of waste, water supply, and distribution systems. The company mainly operates through three business segments: Waste, Water, and Energy. The Waste segment is engaged in the collection, treatment, and recycling of municipal and industrial waste. This segment accounted for a share of 37.2% of the total revenue in 2020. Veolia is among the key global players in the management of solid, liquid, non-hazardous, and hazardous waste. It is engaged in managing the entire lifecycle of waste from collection to recovery of waste. This segment also includes the waste-to-energy recovery facility, in which non-hazardous waste that cannot be recycled is transported to incineration plants or landfill sites. The incineration process produces energy in the form of steam that can either be used to power urban or industrial heating networks or converted to energy using turbines. Veolia actively takes part in the recycling services of recovered plastic. The company provides logistic services, from waste collection, processing, maintenance of production equipment to the management of waste discharge at industrial sites. The company has approximately 685 waste-processing facilities. As of December 2020, it provided waste collection services to around 40 million people globally. In the same year, it treated around 47 million metric tons of waste.

Waste Management offers several waste management services, including collection, transfer, recycling, resource recovery,  and disposal services, and operates waste-to-energy facilities. The company serves municipal, residential, commercial, and industrial customers across North America. The company operates through two business segments, namely, Solid Waste and Others. Through the Solid Waste segment, the company offers collection, transfer, disposal, recycling, and resource recovery services. This business unit is also involved in recycling projects. The Others segment offers waste management strategic business solutions (WMSBS), energy and environmental services, recycling brokerage waste and electronic recycling services, landfill gas-to-energy services, and expanded service offerings & solutions. As of December 31, 2020, Waste Management operated 263 solid waste landfills and 5 secure hazardous-waste landfills in North America. It functions primarily in the US and Canada. As of December 31, 2020, the company had 146 landfill gas destruction and beneficial use projects producing commercial methane gas at operated landfills.
