Automotive Differential Market

GKN (UK) and Eaton (Ireland) are the Key Players in the Automotive Differential Market

The automotive differential market is primarily driven by the increasing demand for the vehicles (PCs, LCVs, and HCVs). The automotive differential market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.27% from 2018 to 2025. From a market size of USD 22.51 billion in 2018, it is projected to reach a market size of USD 30.17 billion by 2025. The important factors driving the growth of this market include the demand for ICE and Off-highway vehicles. However, a major restraint for the differential market is the increasing demand for hybrid propulsion light-duty vehicles in developed countries.

Some of the key manufacturers operating in the automotive differential market are GKN (UK), Eaton (Ireland), American Axle (US), JTEKT (Japan), Dana (US), BorgWarner (US), Linamar (Canada), Schaeffler (Germany), ZF (Germany), and Continental (Germany).

The increasing demand for vehicles has changed the market dynamics for the automotive differential market. The major growth strategies include expansions, new product development, and acquisitions. Companies adopted the strategy of expansion to diversify and strengthen their business networks. The companies that adopted this strategy are GKN (UK), Eaton (Ireland), American Axle (US), JTEKT (Japan), and Dana (US).

New product development is another major strategy adopted by industry players. New product development provides companies with a competitive edge. For instance, in 2018, Dana showcased its advanced driveline solutions to global automotive manufacturers during its Winter Test events in Arjeplog, Sweden, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Dana demonstrated the high-performance capabilities of its AdvanTEK torque-vectoring all wheel drive system, Spicer Electrified e-drive gearbox, Spicer OpTiMa central tire inflation system (CTIS), and Spicer SmartConnect disconnecting all wheel drive technology.

GKN adopted the strategies of expansion and supply contracts to retain its position in the automotive differential market. For instance, in September 2017, GKN started constructing a new manufacturing facility in Tokoname City, Japan. Construction of this new facility is scheduled to get completed by the middle of 2018. The new Tokoname City operation will be state-of-the-art and filled with GKN’s best practice manufacturing technology, able to deliver high quality, next-generation AWD (All Wheel Drive) systems, and Rear Drive Modules (RDMs), featuring advanced technologies such as electronic disconnect capability and torque vectoring. Further, in April 2017, GKN announced that its Twinster torque vectoring all wheel drive (AWD) system had entered series production with many major car manufacturers.

On the other hand, Eaton adopted new product developments, supply contracts, and mergers & acquisitions to sustain its market position. In August 2016, Eaton launched its new electronically controlled Limited Slip Differential (ELSD), a hydraulically-operated electronically controlled traction, and a torque distribution system. In December 2016, Eaton announced that it is supplying its electronic-locking differentials for the new Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 mid-size truck. The differentials are applied to both the front and rear axles that helps to deliver exceptional off-road performance. Eaton also supplies the rear locking differential that is available on other Colorado models, as well as Chevrolet’s Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban.
