Distributed Energy Resource Management System Market

Siemens AG (Germany) and ABB, Ltd. (Switzerland) are the Key Players in the Distributed Energy Resource Management System Market

The global distributed energy resource management system market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 15.70%, from 2017 to 2022. The market in North America is estimated to be the largest for distributed energy resource management system, followed by the market in Europe in 2017. This trend is expected to continue till 2022. The growth of the distributed energy resource management system market is driven by the increasing share of renewable energy mix in the total energy mix, decreasing cost of solar PV and energy storage, and growing government mandates and updated policies related to renewable resources.

The distributed energy resource management market is dominated by a few global players. The key players operating in this market include Siemens AG (Germany), ABB, Ltd. (Switzerland), General Electric (U.S.), and Schneider Electric (France).

Major strategies adopted by the players include contracts & agreements, new product launches, expansions, and mergers & acquisitions. New product developments was the most commonly adopted strategy from 2013 to February 2017. Industry players also adopted contracts & agreements and new product launches, which were the first and second most widely followed strategies, respectively, during the same period.

Siemens AG founded in 1847 and headquartered in Germany, is a leading manufacturing and engineering company. It operates its business through nine segments, namely, power & gas, healthcare, energy management, digital factory, process industries and drives, mobility, building technologies, wind power and renewables, and financial services. Siemens provide DERMS under its energy management business segment. Siemens provide an integrated and comprehensive portfolio of software and hardware needed to manage the modern two-way grid. Some of the features are planning and impact analysis, which evaluates network capacity to support DER and integrate T&D planning effort with operational decisions. It provides customer centric application which helps to create the ability to define, aggregate, forecast, settle, and control customer owned DER installations within a territory.  In February 2017, Siemens AG (Germany) upgraded its EnergyIP software with a new integrated distributed energy application which combines distributed energy management, virtual power plant capabilities, and demand response on one platform. This is expected to increase the market for VPP solutions provided by the company in the energy industry.

ABB, Ltd. founded in 1883 and headquartered in Switzerland, is a leading player in electrification product, discrete automation and motion, and process automation and power grid. It caters to DERMS in its utility section which falls under the ABB Ability. This segment is the digital business unit of ABB through which it achieves unified, cross industry digital capability. Under its utility section it offers solutions such as demand response management, virtual power plant, connected asset lifecycle management, power plant and automation, power plant and turbines, and digital substation. ABB through its DERMS system enables utilities to manage the entire lifecycle of DER from registration to optimization. As the number of intermittent renewables and DERs are being integrated in the grid, operator needs to keep the grid balance and optimize in real time while maintaining the system reliability and power quality. The ABB Ability DERMS helps distributors, to significantly reduce voltage excursions and decrease device operations and O&M Cost. Thus, ABB’s DERMS is a new edge technology management unit for power optimization and control. In October 2016, ABB, Ltd. (Switzerland) launched a micro grid solution to address the demand for flexible technology and distributed generation. This would help to maximize the use of renewable energy sources reducing dependency on fossil fuels used by generator sets.
