Global Fire-resistant Lubricants Market Dynamics

DRIVER: Massive industrial growth in Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa

Asia Pacific is witnessing significant industrial growth, which has fueled the demand for fire-resistant lubricants. This is expected to continue over the next five years. Domestic and foreign investments in key sectors, such as energy, manufacturing, construction, and mining, have consistently grown over the past decade in the Asia Pacific. China, home to almost 18% of the global population, has surpassed the US in the consumption of fire-resistant lubricants. The outlook for industrial growth in China is good, and the sales of fire-resistant lubricants in the country are growing significantly.

Over the past decade, India has recorded decent GDP growth, but the industrial growth rate in 2021 was 10.3%. The country has attracted investments in key industrial sectors, such as construction, cement, steel, and energy. The economic outlook for India has been very optimistic due to government initiatives such as Make in India. The Government of India is currently encouraging the manufacturing sector by liberalizing policies and providing additional incentives, such as land at cheap rates and faster clearances from all the concerned departments.

The high industrial growth in the Middle East & Africa contributes to the fire-resistant lubricants market. The outlook on industrialization in Sub-Saharan Africa is very optimistic. Robust government policies, widespread natural resources, and a positive investor outlook support industrialization in the region. The increasing trade and export-import of the Sub-Saharan African countries with major economies such as India and China are expected to increase transportation, which, in turn, will increase the sales of fire-resistant lubricants during the forecast period.

RESTRAINT: Carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic nature of HFDR

HFDR (phosphate ester) fire-resistant lubricants gain inherent fire resistance from the properties of their molecular structure as phosphate esters have excellent oxidative stability, are noncorrosive, have excellent anti-wear characteristics, and provide operability up to 1500C. Moreover, in extreme conditions, they have good lubricity with higher specific gravity than water. HFDR fire-resistant lubricants are used mainly in power generation, steel plants, aluminum die-casting machines, melting furnaces, and steel mill applications. However, HFDR fire-resistant lubricants are still manufactured using older fluid technology. They are developed with CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic) substances. The combustion fumes they produce are neurotoxic, which means that when they are exposed to natural or manmade toxic substances (neurotoxicants), they alter the normal functionality of the system, which leads to contamination. Thus, HFDR fire-resistant lubricants are used less. HDFRs have a very low viscosity index (< 60) and are susceptible to hydrolysis. It causes issues such as corrosion & rust and lowers the load-carrying capacity (film strength) in oil, which leads to permanent degradation of the lubricant. Though HFDR products provide good pump lubrication, they can limit the service life of servo valves and can be 10 to 15 times more expensive than mineral oil. HFDR fire-resistant lubricants need to be carefully maintained, as these products form aggressive acids as they age. Other disadvantages of HFDR include repeated fluid maintenance, low system reliability, and high total cost of operation. Thus, the CMR nature of the HFDR fire-resistant lubricants restrains the overall market growth.

OPPORTUNITY: Demand for renewable energy

The power industry is one of the major consumers of fire-resistant lubricants. The renewable energy industry is a prospective subsegment of the power generation industry. Currently, wind power generation accounts for a very small share of the overall energy mix. However, the sector is growing at an average of 12% annually to reach a capacity of 1,047 gigawatts in 2023, as per the World Wind Energy Association. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the cumulative onshore and offshore wind capacity is estimated to reach 2,015 GW by 2030 and 6,044 GW by 2050. The increase in wind capacity is likely to fuel the demand for wind turbine fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. The number of wind turbines is increasing, along with the size of turbines. These turbines are being installed in remote and offshore locations. Thus, performance is paramount, and any gearbox and bearing failure may lead to a huge problem.

ith the growing number of wind turbines and improved gearbox and bearing technology, the use of advanced lubrication is increasing. Similarly, fossil fuel power plants, hydroelectric power plants, solar thermal power plants, nuclear power plants, geothermal power plants, wind power towers, and tidal power generation also involve huge turbines. In this industry, fire-resistant lubricants are used in electrohydraulic control systems (EHC), diverter systems, steam/gas turbines, boiler areas (dampers and fans), and furnaces (waste-to-energy conversion). Thus, the growth of the renewable energy industry is expected to positively impact the fire-resistant lubricants market and offer lucrative opportunities to fire-resistant lubricant manufacturers.

CHALLENGES: Lack of proper training and product awareness

A significant challenge in the fire-resistant lubricants market is the lack of proper training and product awareness among machinery lubrication professionals, which limits the effective adoption of advanced lubrication solutions. As there is no awareness, the majority of end users, like metal processing, mining, construction, power generation, marine, and aerospace industries of developing countries, continue to utilize traditional fire-resistant lubricants because they are cost-effective. This results in hazardous fire-related problems, which lead to loss of property and life. For example, in the metal production industry, as the temperature increases, conventional fire-resistant lubricants may drain from the bearing quicker, which, in turn, can cause the failure of the bearing due to high heat or lack of lubricant quantity. This often leads to product contamination.

The use of the wrong fire-resistant lubricants may result in huge losses. There have been several incidents in the past where companies had to discard or recall their products due to hazardous factors by using the wrong lubricants. The end-use industries must work closely with fire-resistant lubricant manufacturers in training fire-resistant lubrication engineers and adopting best practices to prevent fire related or contamination related to fire-resistant lubricants.
