The biocides market is expected to be neutral affected due to disruptions in the global supply chain on one hand and the high demand of disinfectants for household & personal care on another. Both were caused by the pandemic and coastal storms . The market is highly dependent on the oil & gas, paper & pulp, mining, household, industrial and institutional, paints & coatings and wood industries. Water treatment is one of the major applications in the APAC region. China, with more than 18% of the world’s population, has only 7% of the world’s freshwater resources. Under the 13th Five Year Plan, the government has proposed to upgrade urban underground pipeline networks for water supply, wastewater treatment, and rainwater disposition networks. Driver: Increase in use of antimicrobial protection in end-use industries

The use of biocides has considerably increased in various industries. Cooling tower is one of the major application areas of biocides in power plants, mining, and chemical plants, as cooling water systems provide a favorable environment for the growth of microorganisms. This microbial growth is in the form of a film called ‘biofilm’. Biofilms can cause fouling and can adversely affect equipment performance. They can accelerate corrosion rates and can even perforate the surfaces of cooling towers and heat exchangers. Biofilms can promote corrosion of fouled metal surfaces, which is referred to as microbially influenced corrosion (MIC). In the oil & gas industry, the metal infrastructure used for oil & gas processing undergoes MIC mostly because of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). The growth of SRB is induced by the low content of oxygen, together with stagnant liquid inside the pipelines. Therefore, the demand for oxidizing & non-oxidizing biocides have increased as they are widely used in the manufacturing of household, industrial & institutional (HI&I)  cleaning products such as disinfectant wipes, sprays and other cleaning liquids. The demand for HI&I products significantly increased during the pandemic, resulting in an increase in demand for biocides. The biocides are used in different end-use industries such as water treatment, paints & coatings, fuel treatment, food & beverages, and industrial machines to control the growth of microorganisms and prevent operational failures.

The Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR, Regulation (EU) 528/2012) aims to improve the usage and functioning of biocidal products in the European Union (EU) to ensure a high level of protection for humans, animals, and the environment. All biocidal products require authorization before they can be launched in the market. In addition, the active substances contained in a biocidal product must be approved before it is launched in the market. In addition, BPR requires huge volumes of toxicology and environmental effects testing for registration of all types of biocides. In addition, companies outside the EU are not bound to follow BPR, but the EU suppliers are required to fulfill the obligations.
