Silicone Market

Source: Investor Presentation, Secondary Literature, Expert Interviews, and MarketsandMarkets Analysis

The industrial process end-use industry is expected to account for the largest silicone market share during the forecast period.

The industrial process segment is expected to hold the largest market share during the forecast period. It is growing rapidly due to the increasing demand for silicone materials in applications, such as lubricants, anti-foaming agents in offshore drilling, paper production, industrial coatings, and paint additives. Silicone-based sealants are used in demanding industrial processes requiring resistance to high pressure, temperature and corrosion, and adaptation to all types of surfaces. Not only are they used as polymers, but they can also be added to polymers from other materials to improve their performance. Silicones also provide higher durability and resistance in industrial coatings as well as improved performance of lubricants.

By type, the elastomers segment is expected to be the largest contributor in the silicone market during the forecast period.

Based on type, the silicone elastomers segment is likely to account for the largest share of the market during the forecast period. The growth in this segment is attributed to the increasing use in various products, including voltage line insulators, cooking, baking, and food storage products; undergarments, sportswear, and footwear; electronics; medical devices, and implants; and in household gaskets and O-rings. Some silicone elastomers are also used in the manufacturing of sealants. Their physiological inertness makes them suitable for use in the healthcare industry, especially for blood transfusions and in artificial heart valves & various prosthetic devices.

Silicone Market

APAC is expected to account for the largest market share during the forecast period

APAC is estimated to be the leading silicone market during the forecast period. The market growth in this region can be attributed to the rapidly increasing demand for silicone from the end-use industries, especially electronics, building & construction, personal care & consumer products, and transportation.  Moreover, several silicone manufacturers, such as Wacker Chemie AG (Germany) and Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. Ltd., (Japan) are setting up or expanding their manufacturing facilities in this region to leverage low manufacturing and labor costs and high demand from the end-use industries, thereby boosting the silicone market growth in the region.

Market Dynamics

Driver: Superior properties of silicone

Silicones are one of the most versatile products used in a wide range of industries. They have unique properties such as durability, dielectricity, adhesion, foam control, discharge safety, UV stability, glossiness, transparency, radiation resistance, hydrophobicity, heat resistance, and flexibility, which enable them to be used in myriad forms and applications. This durable and highly resistant material is best suited for use in temperatures higher than 100°C (the limit of most other rubbers). Silicone rubber is non-toxic and used where food quality is required. The superior properties of silicone also make it useful for seals and gaskets that need to be steamed or sterilized. Owing to its excellent electrical resistance, it is also used in the electrical & electronics industry.
Silicone helps in enhancing the performance of automotive by  providing rapid curing, optimum adhesion, outstanding resistance to oil and coolant, good heat resistance, and low compression set. Hence, silicone fluids and their secondary products, such as oil blends and emulsions, are used widely in the automotive industry. In recent years, auto manufacturers have been continuously focusing on increasing the safety requirements in vehicles and are developing solutions for the same. The systems in a vehicle are continuously upgraded with new technologies for achieving fuel economy, comfort (climate control and global positioning system), entertainment, and so on. Thus, silicones are widely used in these systems. Their use in electrical insulation is also increasing because of their superior properties. Silicone helps in protecting and sealing electronic circuits and electronic devices from heat and accidental damage. Their exceptional properties facilitate manufacturers in providing customized solutions to their clients for their specific applications.

Restraint:  Stringent regulatory policies for silicone

Most of the silicone products do not have any restrictions. However, the use of a few silicone products, especially in the personal care & consumer products and medical & healthcare industries, is regulated by certain regulatory authorities in some countries. For example, the UK Competent Authorities and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) limits the use of two silicone products, namely, cyclosiloxanes D4 and D5, which are used in the personal care industry. These substances are likely to be restricted to a concentration of 0.1% by weight in personal care products. Apart from the UK, their use is also restricted in Canada and the US.
In the medical & healthcare industry, silicones are considered of medical-grade only when they are USP Class V and VI approved. All medical grade silicones must be approved by the regulatory bodies before they are commercialized. A few regulations that companies have to comply with while manufacturing silicone rubber for the medical industry in the US are the Restriction of Use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), the Dodd-Frank Act, and the US government’s International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All these regulations and their approval process are time-consuming, which, therefore, restrains the growth of the silicones market in these industries.

Opportunity: Development of antimicrobial silicone elastomers for the healthcare industry

Medical-grade silicone elastomers are tested for biocompatibility and are suitable for the healthcare industry. Owing to their low toxicity, silicone elastomers used for medical applications present a low risk of unfavorable biological reactions and have, thus, gained acceptance in food and medical applications. However, bacteria and other microorganisms can affect silicone elastomer properties. Biocides are used to fight with these microorganisms and prevent the buildup of harmful bacteria that increase the risk of contamination or transmission of infections in humans.
Despite all the preventive measures undertaken, the incidence of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) is increasing globally, thereby driving the need for better preventative techniques and technologies to reduce the infection rates. In the US, hospitals are compelled to bear the costs of treating HAIs because of the changing health insurance policies. Therefore, manufacturers of medical devices are seeking newer technologies to help reduce the growth of microorganisms on their devices. For this purpose, additives known as antimicrobials or biocides are being used. Antimicrobial silicone elastomers are used for enhancing the performance of end products by reducing microbial contamination of elastomers. The growth of microbes can harm the end products and can cause foul smell, discoloration, and formation of fungus in many medical device applications such as wound drains and catheters. Antimicrobial silicone elastomer controls the growth of microbes in or on the human body. Therefore, the development of these elastomers is expected to provide new growth opportunities to the market.

Challenge: Fluctuating raw material prices

The key challenge in the global silicone market is a continuous fluctuation of raw material and energy prices. The sharp increase in prices of raw materials, such as methyl chloride and silicon metal, from 2016 to 2018 indirectly reduces the profit margins of silicone producers. This subsequently leads to an increase in the price of the overall silicone products. The rising raw material costs are expected to have a negative impact on the global silicone market. Silicone producers continuously face high and volatile feedstock costs and are expected to pass on the price rise to the end-users. For example, the major players in the silicone market, such as Wacker and Elkem, recently increased the prices of their silicone products to adjust for the high raw material and energy costs. Thus, continuously fluctuating raw materials and energy prices have become a major challenge for producers in the silicone industry.
