Drivers: Growing deep-water offshore oil & gas production

The demand for oil & gas has grown in recent years, increasing by 31% since 2000. This demand, primarily driven by the developing world, is forecast to continue as oil is a primary energy source for major industries, such as transportation, and cannot be easily substituted by alternative energy sources. However, with the supply of oil & gas from conventional resources declining, the focus has shifted to deep-water offshore oil & gas production, which, in turn, created a major demand for ROVs for drilling support, intelligence, and repair & maintenance activities in the subsea market.

These countries have increased their share of crude oil production from projects over the previous decade. Brazil increased its deep oil production from 1.3 million b/d in 2005 to 2.2 million b/d in 2015. Recently, in the Middle East, Energean Israel Limited submitted a field development plan for the Karish and Tanin natural gas fields to the Israeli Petroleum Commissioner. In 2017, Delfin Midstream (US) and Golar LNG Ltd. (Bermuda) have signed a joint development agreement that will facilitate the financing, marketing, construction, development, and operation of Delfin LNG, which is the only permitted floating LNG export project in the US. Delfin LNG is a brownfield Deepwater Port requiring minimal additional infrastructure investment to support up to four FLNG vessels producing up to 13 million metric tons of LNG per annum.

Challenge: UUV Autonomy

The biggest challenge for the unmanned underwater vehicle market is to achieve complete autonomy. Underw ater vehicles still face technical challenges in terms of achieving and maintaining uninterrupted communications with surface vehicles, especially at longer ranges. As water attenuates radio waves and other wireless signals, high bandwidth communications are difficult underwater using traditional communication technologies. In some experimentations, laser communications were used. However, laser communication systems are expensive and consume a considerable amount of energy.

The power available to unmanned underwater vehicle market determines how fast they can go, while energy determines how far they can go. With the ever-growing demand for speed, endurance, additional sensors, and onboard processing, energy is an issue for traditional UUVs. Currently, most of the UUVs do not have the capability to recharge batteries and have to carry a large number of batteries to maintain power throughout their deployment. High energy density power sources are, therefore, finding opportunities for true operational benefits of UUVs. Improved battery and fuel cell technology will help increase the operational benefits of UUVs, thus driving the market further.

Fuel cells are seen as a promising technology to provide more power and endurance to UUVs. Fuel cells can safely store 10 times as much energy as lithium-ion batteries. Researches are also being carried out on solar power to recharge UUV batteries. As of now, solar-based propulsion systems require large solar panels that consume more power. However, designing a more efficient solar powered propulsion system would be a more viable option for the UUVs.
