Medical Waste Management Market

Medical Waste Management Market - New Revenue Pockets

Recently, there has been quite a lot of developments in terms of technology and functionality of the medical waste management industry. Environmental and safety regulations for medical waste management have set standards for the storage and treatment of regulated medical waste. Regulated medical waste can be stored, steam sterilized, incinerated, or treated by an acceptable mechanism that includes the usage of autoclaves, shredders, sterilizers, etc.

Treatment of regulated medical waste can result in the release of toxic emissions to the environment. Staying abreast of the appropriate way of dumping and treating medical waste saves money, improves compliance and worker safety, and reduces environmental impacts.

Regulatory bodies in the Americas and European countries are extremely strict with regards to the way medical waste is handled. The slightest negligence in the handling of medical waste can cost a huge amount of money. Thus, most of the hospitals and healthcare industries opt for medical waste management companies to help assist them manage the disposal of medical waste. This acts as an impetus for the medical waste management market.

Commercial equipment is now available that disinfects medical waste through microwave irradiation. Most microbes are destroyed by the action of microwaves of a frequency of about 2,450 MHz and a wavelength of 12.24 cm.

Usually, shredded waste is humidified by adding water and then transferred to the irradiation chamber. This chamber is equipped with a series of microwave generators that irradiate the shredded medical waste for about 20 minutes and heat it to about 95°C.

Although the use of microwave technology is growing in popularity in numerous countries, it is a relatively high cost that is coupled with relatively sophisticated operation and maintenance issues.

Thermal technology is the dominating waste treatment technology that garnered the maximum revenue in 2013. This is followed by chemical & mechanical technologies. Microwave irradiation is an emerging technology with a significant growth rate. All these technological developments create new revenue pockets in the medical waste management market.
